The cabin rented by the Assassins
In 2020, an Assassin cell consisting of Layla Hassan, Shaun Hastings, and Rebecca Crane rented a cabin on a hill outside Concord, Massachusetts, using it as a temporary safehouse.
History[]
The cabin happened to be built right next to the burial spot of Eivor Varinsdottir, the jarlskona of the Raven Clan who had traveled to Vinland during the last years of her life. Layla and her team, having been led there by a mysterious message, stayed in the cabin as Layla relived Eivor's genetic memories in her Animus HR-8.5, using a DNA sample extracted from Eivor's skeletal remains.[1]
After Layla discovered the location of the Yggdrasil chamber from Eivor's memories, she traveled to Norway to access it and use the technology to save the Earth from a series of global anomalies. She was successful in her mission, though it came at the cost of her life and the release of Basim Ibn Ishaq from his digital imprisonment inside the Grey. Traveling to the cabin, Basim met Shaun and Rebecca, who had received a message from Layla, whose consciousness became trapped in the Grey. Layla informed her teammates of her fate and discouraged them from coming to rescue her as it was too dangerous.[1]

Shaun and Rebecca were initially furious with Basim for deceiving Layla, but answered his questions regarding the Assassins and their ongoing conflict with the Templars. When Basim asked that he meet the Assassins' Mentor, William Miles, face-to-face, Shaun and Rebecca left to find William while Basim remained at the cabin by himself. He used the Animus HR-8.5 to explore Eivor's memories, hoping to gain her skills through the Bleeding Effect and find evidence of his children Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel being alive in the modern era.[1]
During his breaks between Animus sessions, Basim took to exploring the area around the cabin, interacting with Eivor's grave, Layla's laptop, and a campfire, among others. He also discovered a note inviting the Assassins to the wedding of couple John and Judy, which he considered to be worth checking out.[1] Finding Shaun's collection of books about Norse mythology, Basim read one of the titles, Viking Myths, and his interest was piqued by the different retelling of Baldr and Loki's story.[2]
Eventually, while Basim was in the Animus reliving the last of Eivor's memories, he was contacted by William Miles for their "face-to-face meeting." After questioning Basim's motives, William agreed to work with him but first requested a sample of his blood, to parse its genetic sequences through the Animus and allow the Brotherhood to research his memories. Basim complied before exiting the Animus and taking a walk outside the cabin, where he experienced a Bleeding Effect-induced hallucination of Eivor and Odin.[3]
