The COVID-19 pandemic is a global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). By 5 May 2023, more than 772 million confirmed cases occurred, with more than 6 million deaths having been reported and another 33.5 million estimated to be attributable to COVID-19, making it one of the deadliest pandemics in history. The Public health emergency of international concern lasted from 30 January 2020 until 5 May 2023.[1]

Strategies[]

Social distancing,[2] a key COVID-19 countermeasure, involves maintaining a physical distance of at least six feet from others to minimize the spread of respiratory droplets that may contain the virus. It directly addresses the person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 in various settings, particularly in crowded places, by reducing close contact and lowering the risk of infection.[1]

History[]

Cases of COVID-19 began as early as December 2019, with ground zero being identified as Wuhan, China. The virus quickly spread globally, leading to widespread illness, lockdowns, and significant disruptions to daily life.[1]

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on 11 March 2020, marking a historic and ongoing global health crisis.[1] On 1 May of that year, Layla Hassan and her brother Rami traded emails regarding her disappearance, with Rami asking her if it was prompted by COVID. Layla denied this, saying that she and her cell were all practicing the necessary social distancing requirements.[2]

On 5 May 2023, the WHO downgraded COVID-19 from being a global health emergency, but it continued to refer to it as a pandemic.[1]
