Bryce (died c. 422 BCE) was a Lesbian who lived during the 5th century BCE. She was the lover of Ligeia, who was a member of the Daughters of Artemis.

Biography[]

At some point, Bryce met and fell in love with the Ligeia.[1] They turned one of the dilapidated houses among the ruins within the Petrified Valley on Lesbos their hideout, decorating it with flowers, meeting each night there to enjoy each others' company and the poetry of Sappho.[2]

However, one night they were supposed to meet at their hideout, Bryce ran late because she wanted to find a rose that was "as perfect as [Ligeia] is." When she did come to their hideout, Ligeia was nowhere to be found.[2] Afraid of the petrified forest and the strange ruins within, Bryce attempted to get the villagers of Eresos to help her find and save Ligeia from the clutches of the Writhing Dread.[1]

Instead of help, the villagers turned on her as a man among them accused Bryce of sacrificing Ligeia to the creature instead, and sought to execute her before she could "lead the Writhing Dread right to [them]". Before the mob could act, however, the clamor draw the attention of the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who intervened, saving Bryce.[1]

After, Bryce led Kassandra to their 'sanctuary' within the Dread Ruins, telling her about Ligeia.[2] Discovering scraps of Ligeia's clothing leading into the forest, and hearing her cries, Bryce and Kassandra ran past petrified men until they reached the doorway of the Petrified Temple. Finding no way to enter with ease, Bryce then told Kassandra about a story Ligeia had told her, that the Daughters of Artemis had discovered a key in a pit full of snakes when they still trained in the region in ages past. She also told Kassandra about the mercenary Zetes, who had gained the epithet "Slayer of the Writhing Dread" after allegedly killing the creature.[2]

While Kassandra pursued these clues, Bryce awaited at the steps of the Petrified Temple, listening for Ligeia's cries, believing her still to be alive.[2]

Once the door was opened, Bryce sprinted into the depths of the temple, ignoring Kassandra's cries to wait and be careful. Eventually, they discovered a great hall, with the Writhing Dread standing in the middle of it.[3]

Approaching the creature, Bryce pleaded with it, believing Ligeia still to be able to hear and recognize her. Alas, as the creature faced her, its gaze turned Bryce to stone, and then the creature shattered the statue Bryce had become.[3]

Legacy[]

In the following battle, Kassandra slew the Medusa and took the artifact that had seemingly given it life. She also bid farewell to Bryce and Ligeia, finding a perfect rose in the remains of the former.[3]

Some time later, Kassandra saved a woman who claimed that she was working on a cure for the petrified victims of Medusa. Kassandra was going to use the cure on Bryce, however this turned out to be all for nothing as the woman had no intentions whatsoever of reversing the effects of the petrification.[4]
