Bian Lingcheng (邊令誠; died 756) was a Tang dynasty eunuch in Emperor Xuanzong's court and secretly a member of the Golden Turtles.[1]
During the An Lushan Rebellion, Gao Xianzhi and Feng Changqing sent troops to garrison at the Tong Pass to resist the advancing Yeluohe Army, with Lingcheng present to supervise the army. [citation needed] After repelling Sun Xiaozhe's attack, Xianzhi and Changqing rejected Lingcheng's request to leave the fortress to pursue the retreating enemy troops, judging it to be suicidal. At this, Lingcheng threatened to deprive Changqing of his position and intended to force him out of the army. Xianzhi, who had just lost a large number of troops, was furious and denounced both Lingcheng and his superior Chancellor Yang Guozhong, who was a party with him. A humiliated Lingcheng returned to the capital of Chang'an, but not before threatening to report the matter to Guozhong.[2]
In 756 when the Emperor and his closest circle fled Chang'an in advance of An Lushan's army, Lingcheng was left behind by Guozhong to oversee what remained of the court. When Lushan seized the imperial palace, Lingcheng grovelled for mercy before the self-proclaimed Emperor of Yan, insisting that he would pledge his loyalty to the Yan regime. It was all futile, for Lushan simply ordered his immediate execution. Lingcheng barely had time to scream before Xiaozhe smashed his face in from behind with his spiked club.[3]
