In the late 7th century BCE, the Pythia in the Sanctuary of Delphi gave the residents of Thera a prophecy telling them to travel to Libya to set up a new home. However, they did not follow the prophecy, resulting in a period of drought which lasted for 7 seven years.
Eventually, Battus visited the Oracle again and heeded her advice, bringing a group of Therans and eventually founded the colony of Cyrenaica and Cyrene.
According to Greek legends, the god Apollo bade Battus to build Cyrene by a sacred spring. That day, he fired an arrow with his bow that pierced the heavens. He also likely had a spear forged for him. He eventually died in 600 BCE and was buried in a tomb in Cyrene.
