The Battle of Sulu was fought in early 1725 on the shores of the Sultanate of Sulu, primarily between the members of the Zhang Wei Union and the Chinese Brotherhood of Assassins, both of whom sought a crescent amulet—a Piece of Eden—which had been seized by the Suluese forces.
The battle consisted of both a ground and naval clash, with the ground battle being fought between the British Assassin Edward Kenway and the navigator John Young, and the Chinese Assassins Xiao Han, Liu Qing, and Xue Yan. Meanwhile, the remaining Union members, led by Shimazu Saito and aided by the mercenary Nagamasa and his men, engaged the fleet of the Chinese Brotherhood's ally, Admiral Jeong, to prevent it from landing.
After a lengthy fight, the Chinese Assassins ultimately emerged victorious when Xiao Han inadvertently killed the Union's doctor Xialun Qing and seized the amulet. Having achieved their objective, the Chinese Assassins and Jeong's fleet retreated, while the Union members and Nagamasa's mercenaries did the same, escaping from the pursuing Suluese forces.
Prelude[]
In 1725, the members of the Zhang Wei Union traveled to Sulu aboard their vessel, the Fenghuang, at the request of their ally Jan van Aert, the Dutch East India Company's chief navigator, who had asked them to reconvene there after previously escaping from a riot in Manila. However, Jan had secretly betrayed the Union by making a deal with Sultan Badarud-Din I, promising to deliver him the crescent amulet in the Union's possession in exchange for an alliance.[1]
With the Sultanate's fleet threatening the Fenghuang, the Union members believed they did not have much of a choice and reluctantly accepted Jan's terms, handing over the amulet.[1] While the artifact was stored in a warehouse, most of the Union members were imprisoned, though they soon managed to escape. In the process, they eliminated a number of Suluese guards, and the Fenghuang's captain Rupiya knocked out Jan for his betrayal.[2]
After reconvening, the Union members began planning to retrieve the amulet and then escape from Sulu. However, at that moment, they witnessed the arrival of a Qing fleet, captained by Admiral Jeong and carrying the Chinese Assassins Xiao Han, Liu Qing, and Xue Yan.[2]
The battle[]

The Chinese Assassins fighting the Suluese guards
Seeking the amulet for their own ends, the Chinese Assassins immediately attacked the warehouse where it was stored. While Xiao Han and Liu Qing eliminated the guards, Xue Yan attempted to infiltrate the building and recover the Piece of Eden. Unwilling to let his Chinese brethren seize the amulet, Edward Kenway decided to face them alone and ordered his allies to return to the Fenghuang and prepare the ship for departure. However, John Young refused to let Edward risk his life and went after him, with Xialun Qing following closely behind.[3]
Edward stopped Xue Yan from entering the warehouse, though he was soon attacked by Xiao Han, and the two Assassins engaged in a sword duel. At that moment, Jeong, watching the battle from aboard her ship, decided to hinder the Chinese Assassins' mission, as payback for treating her like their minion. She ordered her men to fire on the warehouse, partially destroying it and blocking most access routes.[3]
While John and Qing looked for an entry point into the demolished warehouse, they were attacked by Xue Yan, though John was able to fend her off long enough for Qing to find a small tunnel only she could fit through. While Qing went through the tunnel, Xue Yan spotted another entry point and jumped on John's back to reach it. Moments later, the warehouse's roof collapsed, seemingly trapping both Qing and Xue Yan inside.[3] John desperately dug through the debris in search of Qing until he was attacked by Liu Qing, forcing him to engage the Chinese Assassin.[4]
Inside the warehouse, Xue Yan attacked Qing but stopped when the latter revealed that she was just a doctor. Not wishing to harm a non-combatant, the Assassin warned Qing to stay out of her way, but the latter ran through an open door, moments before the path was blocked by falling debris. Now alone, Qing was able to retrieve the chest holding the crescent amulet with the help of her pet monkey Wukong. She then escaped from the warehouse through another tunnel, only to be taken hostage by Xue Yan.[4]

The Chinese Assassins attempting to bargain with Edward
Witnessing this, Edward, John, Xiao Han, and Liu Qing stopped their fighting, and the Chinese Assassins attempted to strike a deal with Edward, promising to release Qing if he allowed them to leave with the amulet. However, Jeong disagreed with the Assassins' attempt to negotiate with their enemies, and ordered her fleet to open fire on both groups.[4]
In the resulting chaos, Xue Yan released Qing and dropped the amulet's chest,[4] allowing Edward to pick up the Piece of Eden. He then used its powers to conjure multiple apparitions of himself and defeat Xiao Han, pinning him to the ground. However, he hesitated to take the Chinese Mentor's life when the amulet showed him a vision of his future death, as well as the demise of his yet-unborn son, Haytham Kenway. This allowed Xiao Han to break free, prompting John to intervene and knock him down.[5]
Furious, Xiao Han lunged at John with his sword, but Qing took the blow instead, sacrificing herself to save her fiancé. After Qing died in John's arms, leaving both him and Edward devastated, Xiao Han seized the amulet and escaped with Liu Qing and Xue Yan.[5]
As more Suluese soldiers arrived on the scene and prepared to attack Edward and John, the pair were saved by Nagamasa and his mercenaries. Nagamasa told Edward that they had been sent by Shimazu Saito, who was currently fighting against Jeong's fleet alongside the rest of the Fenghuang's crew, and proceeded to take both Edward and John to his ship so they could escape.[6]
Aftermath[]
- "I thought our whole purpose was to create a new and better world... where people would no longer need to live in fear of oppression! But holding an innocent doctor hostage and spilling her blood? Where in the world is the justice in such foul deeds?! Is this the noble cause of which you've spoken so much?!"

Although able to flee Sulu, the Zhang Wei Union members were left devastated by the death of Xialun Qing, whose body they were forced to leave behind. Edward Kenway blamed himself for being unable to save Qing, as well as losing the crescent amulet. Despite this, Edward's time holding the Piece of Eden proved to have some lingering effects, as the Assassin continued to experience visions of the future. This informed him of the location of another Piece of Eden in the Shwedagon Pagoda in Burma.[6]
Meanwhile, with the crescent amulet in their possession, the Chinese Assassins and Jeong decided against pursuing the Fenghunag and instead planned to deliver the Piece of Eden to Lee Huiyin. Qing's death also affected the Chinese Assassins, especially Xue Yan, who reprimanded Xiao Han for murdering an innocent doctor in cold blood. All three Assassins were ultimately left feeling conflicted about their actions, which went against their Creed, and began questioning if they had lost their way in pursuit of their goals.[6]
