The Battle of Meung-sur-Loire took place on 15 June 1429 and followed the Battle of Jargeau. The battle was the second major offensive in the French army's Loire Campaign as part of the Hundred Years' War.

Background[]

Having already achieved notable victories at the Siege of Orléans and the Battle of Jargeau, Jeanne d'Arc's army of almost 7,000 troops moved to confront the English forces. The French focused on the bridge fortifications at Meung-sur-Loire, seeking to disrupt the English control of key river crossings.[1] This campaign was part of the Dauphin Charles' broader efforts to reclaim territory in the region.[2]

Battle[]

The walled town held a castle within, which was the headquarters of John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and Thomas Scales, 7th Baron Scales.[2] The battle unfolded as a swift, single-day engagement in which Jeanne d'Arc's commanded troops strategically and tactically bypassed the castle and the city, directing their efforts towards a determined assault on the bridge fortifications. Successfully securing control of the bridge, the French strategically left a garrison in place to ensure its uselessness to the English forces. Undeterred by the triumph at Meung-sur-Loire, Joan's forces swiftly pivoted their focus to the next objective, pressing forward with their campaign by advancing directly towards the city of Beaugency.[1]
