The Battle of Beaugency took place on 16 and 17 June 1429. The third major offensive and fourth overall, of the French Army's Loire Campaign as part of the Hundred Years' War.
Background[]
After the successes at Orléans, Jargeau, and Meung-sur-Loire, Jeanne d'Arc and the French forces trudged further down the Loire River.[1] The English, led by the regrouped John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, were stationed at Beaugency, a town on the Loire River. The French forces, including troops loyal to Charles VII and those commanded by Joan of Arc, sought to capture Beaugency to secure control of the strategically important river crossing.[2]
Battle[]
On 16 June 1429,[2] the French besieged Beaugency, leading to a protracted and intense battle. Under constant heavy artillery fire directed at the town's walls, and after Jeanne had a further 1000 more men in reinforcements,[1] courtesy of Constable Arthur de Richemont,[2] the English surrendered the next day. Before an English relief force from Paris led by Sir John Fastolf arrived, the French had already moved ahead to the next town, Patay.[1]
