The Battle of Anegawa (姉川の戦い) was a military conflict that occurred on 30 July 1570 between the joint forces of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu against the allied Asakura and Azai clans, who were reacting to Nobunaga's sieges on their castles of Yokoyama and Odani, respectively,[1] and were in high spirits following their defeating his attempted siege of Kanegasaki a few months prior. After daimyō Azai Nagamasa's forces joined the Asakura, Nobunaga and his troops beat a forced retreat to the shallow Ane River and united with Ieyasu's army.[2]

Both sides plunged into the water to fight each other, with Ieyasu routing the Asakura before circling to flank the Azai's while they faced Nobunaga. The surviving Azai and Asakura members fled to the Enryaku-ji temple on Mount Hiei, where a Tendai Buddhist sect took them in.[2] The Tendai had trained their own sōhei[3] who prevented Nobunaga from completely eliminating both clans after the battle, but could not stop Nobunaga from massacring most of the temple's inhabitants in 1571.[2]
