The Basilica of Maxentius (Italian: Basilica di Massenzio) is a landmark located in the Roman Forum. It was the largest building in the Forum. During the Renaissance, it was located in the Antico District. It's next to the Basilica Aemilia.

History[]

This Basilica's construction began under Emperor Maxentius in 308, who was later defeated by Constantine in the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. Constantine oversaw the building's completion through 312 and relished the satisfaction of completing Maxentius' project.[1]

The Basilica was a multifunctional building used as a courthouse, council chamber and meeting hall. It borrowed pieces of its design from other basilicas and Roman baths.[1]

During the 16th century of the Renaissance, in order to liberate Rome, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze destroyed the local Borgia tower nearby and bought the Basilica.[2] During the same period, another Italian Assassin Lo Sparviero visited the Basilica during his missions.[3]
