Azadeh was a Persian mercenary and a brief love interest of Roshan.
Biography[]
Early life[]
During her childhood, Azadeh was trained by her father to protect their village, which was under constant attack. Instead of dogs, she was told to pick a wolf pup and chose a runt. Naming her Onyx, she trained her wolf companion many commands by using whistles and hand signals. Along with Onyx, Azadeh became a pair of mercenaries.[1]
Tracking the Martyrs of Agaunum[]
By 824, Azadeh learned her father had become ill and in need of a cure. When a hooded stranger came, he offered a cure in exchange for her and Onyx's help on his mission.[2] She accepted the mission and traveled to meet him at a tavern in Fustat. There, she met her fellow cohorts and saw the stranger address the group of mercenaries of their mission. The mission was to locate the cult, the Martyrs of Agaunum, and acquire a case, which contained a precious artifact.[3]
Before the stranger and his apprentice left, they gave their rations and weapons for the group to take. After taking her supplies, she became acquainted with the young thief Roshan, who lied about her name. While talking about the other group members' backgrounds, Azadeh and Roshan later prepared themselves and followed their group out of the tavern to track the Martyrs. One night, Azadeh and Onyx left to hunt hares for their group and came back to find Roshan watching the Sun rise. Soon, Azadeh and Roshan talked again as she divulged how her father is sick and how she worked for a cure. Soon, they came together with the group to discuss Roshan's plan, which was to ambush and attack the Martyrs after they drop the Chinese bombmaker Wei's explosive on top of them.[2]
Losing teammates[]
While most of the group readied to attack, Azadeh and Onyx went to protect Wei. However, Christian prophet Francis signaled too early and the blast impacted the group rather than the Martyrs. Azadeh and Onyx later joined the rest of the group against the Martyrs and their guards, but failed to land any fatal attacks on the Martyrs and lost their Welsh comrade Mared. After the Martyrs fled, tensions arose after Samoan warrior Nafanua accused Roman pirate Dias using her as a body shield. Fortunately, Azadeh calmed down their frustrations while Roshan stated they may beat the Martyrs if they sailed the Red Sea to Karachi.[4]
Along with Roshan and Wei, Azadeh was roped with them while they climbed over the mountain in front of the group. After telling Onyx to travel by herself around the terrain, she climbed to the summit with no incidence. However, while descending, they almost fell after Roshan lost their footing. Luckily, twin Norse brothers Geir and Gud saved them, only for Gud to incidentally loosing rocks with his foot atop Wei's head. When the bombmaker was set loose from the rope and bleeding, she told Roshan to hurry to save him. However, Wei fell to his death, much to his group's dismay. Although the rest successfully climbed down, Azadeh joined Roshan to find Wei's remains while the rest made their way towards the nearby dock. While with Roshan, they found Wei's remains besides a recently arrived Onyx. Before leaving to meet with their group, Roshan admitted that Dias, Geir, and Gud were behind it but Azadeh rejected the claim and stated that she was in mourning.[5]
Sailing to Karachi[]
When they all found and stole a dhow, they set sail to Karachi.[5] However, Azadeh soon heard someone scream and found Roshan gone from the ship. Fortunately, she found and aided both Roshan and Nafanua, whom were pushed off by a traitor, back onto the dhow. During one night, Azadeh offered her security and allowed Nafanua to rest. While keeping watch, she saw Roshan awake and offered her apologies about a traitor being in their midst. Azadeh and Roshan soon reconciled and talked about their childhood before Roshan corrected the dhow's direction to Karachi.[6]
Finding the traitors[]
After settling down and recuperating at an inn in Karachi,[6] Azadeh became worried and set out with Onyx to look for Roshan, who left to find new maps for their mission. They soon found a bruised and worn Roshan, who admitted that twin brothers Geir and Gud tried to kill her but she outsmarted them and led them to their own ends. Together, they went to the library to research about the Martyrs. There, they confirmed the Martyrs' symbols and learned about the mystical properties of healing. Unsettled, they left to return to their group to reconvene on their new evidence.[7]
Back at their room, after Roshan explained the new information and their new plan, everyone readied themselves. Back on the trail, they all followed Onyx, who used the Martyrs' scent to track them. However, Azadeh noticed Onyx stop and realized there were others along their path. Before long, they were attacked by archers while Nafanua fell over her horse. Azadeh then ordered Onyx to hide in the dark but the wolf later found and attacked two of the attackers. Soon, Azadeh, Roshan, and Dias attacked the remaining assailants. After killing their enemies, Azadeh then stopped Dias, who was holding Francis by his sword for being a traitor. Tired, she nearly drank from Nafanua's water but was stopped by Roshan, who discovered Nafanua was dead by poison.[1]
Realizing Francis was the only suspect left, they saw him interrogated by Roshan of his background. Instantly, Francis cracked and shouted out his support for the Martyrs before escaping the mercenaries' grasp. Before they could give chase, they were told to stand off by Roshan, who argued that he will lead them to the Martyrs. While readying themselves, Azadeh explained her childhood and the days she met Onyx to Roshan. Following Onyx again, they soon came upon the city of Baghdad.[1]
Defeating the Martyrs[]
Tracking Francis and the Martyrs to the House of Wisdom, the remaining three mercenaries infiltrated the center and found the Martyrs and Francis meeting with their customer. While the Martyrs were in prayer, Azadeh, Dias, and Roshan positioned themselves to ambush. When the customer received and opened the box, he hissed at the Martyrs while Azadeh whistled aloud a signal. Instantly, Onyx attacked and killed Francis, while Roshan and Dias took down two Martyrs. While Dias fought off two Martyrs, Azadeh and Roshan contended against the remaining Martyrs. However, they soon became overwhelmed and disarmed. Fortunately, Onyx saved Roshan, only to be fatally wounded by a Martyr. Upon seeing Onyx hurt, Azadeh rushed and pushed down the Martyr and began stabbing him to death.[8]
After Roshan dealt a heavy blow to the other Martyr, Azadeh ran to Onyx. Holding her whimpering wolf companion, Azadeh cried and watched Onyx pass away in her arms. Meanwhile, the hooded stranger came and assassinated the wounded Martyr before going after the customer. While Azadeh mourned her companion, Dias finally killed his Martyrs while going towards the case. Opening the case, an explosion occurred, killing Dias and shocking everyone else. Coming back, the fight was over as the stranger killed the customer. The stranger soon addressed Roshan and offered a place with the Hidden Ones, but Azadeh insulted the offer as another prison and asked Roshan to come with her. However, Roshan rejected Azadeh's offer and kissed her goodbye on her head, ultimately joining the Hidden Ones. Before leaving, Azadeh learned the stranger had already given her father the cure, as per their agreement. Saddened, Azadeh left as one of the last two survivors of the mission.[8]
Chasing after Roshan[]
After Roshan joined the Alamut Hidden Ones, Azadeh kept searching for her, chasing rumor after rumor. In 862, Roshan wrote Azadeh a letter asking her old friend to stop searching for her. Roshan also told Azadeh that she could have no part in their brotherhood, for their cause was too cruel for their kin and Roshan did not want to see Azadeh hurt.[9]
