The Austrian Rite of the Templar Order is the rite of the Templar Order that oversees operations in Austria.

History[]

The Austrian Rite was assisted during the War of the Austrian Succession by Haytham Kenway, who assassinated an Austrian prince to protect the interests of the Templars.[1]

During the French Revolution, the Austrian Rite supported Chrétien Lafrenière's moderate faction of the Parisian Rite against François-Thomas Germain and his extremists. Their aid was short-lived, however, following Lafrenière's murder by the French Assassin Arno Dorian which inadvertently broke the moderate Templars' movement.[2]

The Magus' Workings[]

By 1851, in Vienna, the Austrian Rite were contacted by Irish Assassin Oscar Kane, who joined their ranks for access for their inventions in exchange for information. Kane used the alias, the "Magus," and communicated with Countess Ada Lovelace, which resulted into a revolutionary invention, the Engine of History.[3] However, their contact ceased on Ada's end, due to her realization of the possible abuse.[4] As a result, he tried to abduct Lovelace but it was stopped by the vigilant acrobat Pierrette Arnaud.[5]

By 1852, Kane had recently took on the deserted soldier Simeon Price, under the alias "Jack Straw," as his apprentice[6] and trained him.[7] By December, Kane brought Price to a party hosted by the Templar, Baron Julius Jacob von Haynau. Met by his lawyer Karl Mayr and Countess Konstanze von Visler, Price was confused and disgusted by the conversation and was luckily brought to the dance floor by the countess. Unknown to Simeon, Kane and the other Templars discussed business as Mayr and Kane moved to their conversation into a private room.[8]

However, talks turned sour as Mayr tried to kill Kane. Luckily, Price found them and in the process, Mayr's throat was slit by Simeon's razor. Soon, Kane and Price left the scene quickly.[8] By next year, unknown to Price, Kane was already influencing their fellow acquaintance, János Libényi, to attack Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria in order to test out one of his devices.[3] Meanwhile, Konstanze and Oscar still continued to work together by helping each on her innovative new drill. Yet, Kane's influence over Libényi ran its course as the tailor took matters into his own hands by trying to assassinate Emperor Franz Joseph I.[9]

From this action and János' eventual hanging,[10] Kane lost his apprentice, who grew disillusioned and distrustful with Kane's teachings and ideology.[11] Meanwhile, Konstanze learned from Kane of Ada's notes probably being held by her friend, Arnaud, and sent her henchman Hennighan to ransack her room in her troupe. Yet, he could not find them.[12][13] Kane, under the guise as the Magus, continued his work by finding another rebel and made his way to Italy and broke out revolutionary Felice Orsini from prison.[14] In 1857, he directed factory workers in Birmingham to create casings from his work with Ada to be sent to Paris by the beginning of next year.[15]

Kane arrived in Paris to aid Orsini and oversee the casings' delivery.[16] Soon, the casings were used as bombs as Orsini attempted to kill both Emperor Napoleon III and his wife, but to no success.[17] While Orsini was arrested, Kane was on the run as the local Brotherhood finally realized Kane's deception.[16]

The Hunt for the Magus[]

By 1861, Kane made his way to London[18] as he let the authorities of Price's desertion and survival. There, he lured and ambushed Price to be taken by the police.[3] Soon, Konstanze and Hennighan made their way to London as they tracked Price and Arnaud. Once again, she ordered Hennighan to burglarize her room at the Rossetti's home. Yet, he could not find it.[19]

As Price was in jail, Konstanze heard of a social gathering at the Rossetti's and soon met with Arnaud there. There, she arranged Arnaud to meet her at Brown's Hotel, but prepared to abduct her before meeting as she already knew of her affiliation. With Hennighan, the countess started to torture Arnaud and noticed Ada's notes hidden within her corset.[13]

After a while, she learned of a possible artifact in Bath after Arnaud deciphered some of Ada's notes. However, her plan went askew once Pierrette found an opportunity to escape and reclaim the notes. Injured, Konstanze tried to stop but failed. She soon contacted Kane to inspect the room Arnaud detailed to her.[20] Kane soon ventured by a cab to Bath.[21] Upon his investigation, Kane realized the artifact had been long gone as he was tracked down by his former apprentice, Simeon. While Price rejected Kane's offer to join him, Kane and his henchmen began to shoot at Price.[22]

Above the bunker room, Kane's other henchmen started another gunfight with Arnaud and all of their allies. Within moments, nearly all of Kane's henchmen were killed as Kane himself as surrounded. After multiple tries, Kane was finally restrained by Pierrette, who dragged and pulled him with her over a walkway. As everything began to collapse, Kane was severely injured as everyone, except Price, began to leave. Kane found himself barely breathing before being quickly killed by Price.[22]

The Magus' aftermath[]

Konstanze visited the Rossetti's to pay her respects to the late Elizabeth Siddal, but most importantly, to interrogate Price about hearing about Ada's note being presumably destroyed. Cornered by an armed Arnaud and Simeon, the countess found herself at an impasse and left without any truth to the notes' perseveration.[23]
