The Assault on Rouecistre Fortress was a Viking and Mercian attack against Rouecistre Fortress around 874 CE. Troops loyal to thegn Geadric and Vikings following the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan fought forces under Thegn Tedmund, whom she and Basim Ibn Ishaq sought to capture to deliver for a rescue to their secret ally, Abbot Cynebert, in return for an audience with Fulke, King Aelfred's paladin and member of the Order of the Ancients.

Assault[]

Before they attacked, Eivor went to destroy a naval chain at Rouecistre Blockade in order for Geadric's and her newfound allies to sail their forces to reinforce their side. Afterwards, she greeted and welcomed Geadric with Basim at their camp and then initiated their assault. Together, they breached the inner gates while Eivor left her forces to climb atop a fortress' tower and find Tedmund. Engaging him in one-on-one combat, Eivor bested Tedmund while Basim came to restrain him. After they won the assault, a fyrd led by Abbot Cynebert came to the fortress' outer gate, to where Basim and Eivor carried Tedmund.[1]

At the gates, Eivor and the abbot played the charade of a truce for Tedmund's freedom. However, suspicions arose from the thegn, who questioned the abbot's arrival and heavy favor. However, Tedmund soon fell ill and died in front of all of them. Eivor concluded it was suicide by poison and held Cynebert to his promise of him delivering Fulke to them. Distraught, Cynebert agreed and advised them to come to the priory in a day. After the assault, Eivor went to Geadric and thanked him for the oath, to which the thegn thanked Eivor for fighting Wessex together.[1]

Aftermath[]

A day after the assault, Eivor and Basim went to the priory, only to find it quiet. Entering the abbot's quarters, they met Fulke sitting besides the dead abbot. Soon, Fulke trapped and left them to burn alive and escaped to Canterbury. However, Basim and Eivor escaped and gave chase, only to miss Fulke and Sigurd. There, they found Sigurd's dismembered arm and evidence of him and Fulke being at Portcestre. While Eivor left for her settlement, Basim went to investigate the matters in Suthsexe.[2]
