The Assault on Magnis Fortress was an assault in 876 undertook by Northumbrian warriors loyal to jarl Halfdan Ragnarsson and led by Viking generals Faravid, Ljufvina Bjarmarsdottir and ally and shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan against the invading Picts, secretly allied with the King Ricsige of Northumbria.

Preparations[]

After forging an order from Halfdan with the help of Jorvik council member Hjorr Halfsson, Eivor and Faravid convinced King Ricsige raise a fyrd to join Halfdan's forces.[1] Soon, both Eivor and Faravid met with Ljufvina outside of the fortress, but were joined by and confronted by Halfdan, who debated Faravid's allegiance. Quickly, Ljufivina readied them to fight while Eivor and Halfdan met with the Pict leaders to discuss an alternative peaceful solution. However, they all soon witnessed King Ricsige and his fyrd siding with the Picts within the fortress, which enraged Halfdan to initiate the assault.[2]

Assault[]

Immediately, Halfdan and his allies attacked Magnis, managing to overtake the fortress and defeated the Picts guards. Briefly celebrating the victory, they fought a battalion of incoming Picts trying to retake the fortress. After maintaining their defenses, the Vikings retained the fortress while Halfdan pointed out King Ricsige fleeing from the fortress. Eivor followed and chased down the king, ultimately killing him. Halfdan followed and met with Eivor, declaring he was done with puppet kings and proclaiming to take the mantle of King of Northumbria.[2]

Aftermath[]

At Royal Hall, Halfdan accepted the responsiblity of becoming the new King of Northumbria but showcases his illness at end of his speech. From further inspection, Eivor and healer Moira saw Halfdan's goblet being made of lead, a poisonous metal, while it was determined that Faravid was poisoning Halfdan for years with lead goblets. After Halfdan accused Faravid of treachery, Eivor ultimately decided on Faravid's fate. After this revelation was resolved, Eivor garnered an alliance with Halfdan for Ravensthorpe.[3]
