The Assault on Anecastre was a Viking and Mercian attack against Bishop Herefrith at Anecastre around 875 CE. Troops loyal to thegn Aelfgar and lord Hunwald, with the aid of Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, fought the Order of the Ancients forces under Bishop Herefrith, a palatinus of the Order.

Assault[]

After learning of Herefrith being part of the Order of the Ancients, the lords of Lincolnscire Hunwald and Aelfgar called upon their ally Eivor to confront and attack the bishop. While Bishop Herefrith barricaded himself in Anecastre, Eivor and the lords planned their attack after securing a fyrd to fight for them. After discussing their plan of attack, they initiated the assault and attacked Herefrith's men within the first courtyard. After securing and defeating Herefrith's men, the lords and Eivor found a row of hanged civilians, disgusted at Herefrith's actions. Finding the church within the fortress, they interrogated a priest, who informed him of Herefrith's presence within the church.[1]

While Hunwald and Aelfgar led their forces against the remaining soldiers, Eivor headed inside and confronted the bishop. Finding the bishop ordering more deaths, she quickly assassinated Herefrith and took his medallion as confirmation of his death. After his death, Eivor discussed with Hunwald of his next adventure and asked Eivor to safeguard his lover Swanburrow at her settlement Ravensthorpe. Eivor graciously agreed before heading back to Ravensthorpe.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Depending on the choices made during the Althing, this assault occurs right after Eivor's choice of either Hunwald or Aelfgar as ealdorman in the Althing or after another arc if she chose Herefrith as ealdorman.[2]
