"Let me repay your kindness with action, Assassin. If you will have me, I will join your cause."
―An apprentice to Ezio Auditore, c. 1511.[src]

An Assassin apprentice is a recruit of the Assassin Order who is in training under inducted Assassins to become fully fledged Assassins. In the 16th century, the Master Assassin and later Mentor Ezio Auditore actively recruited new apprentices in Rome and Constantinople, both to strengthen the Order's presence in the region and simultaneously to combat the Templar threat. Connor also recruited several citizens in Boston and New York during the American Revolution.

History[]

Ptolemaic Kingdom[]

Kawab: "I will renounce my name, my family. I will find a new one, as a liberator, alongside you Bayek."
Bayek: "Now you are a Hidden One."
—Bayek recruiting Kawab to the Hidden Ones, 38 BCE.[src]-[m]

Shortly after Bayek co-founded the Hidden Ones with his wife Aya in 47 BCE, he began recruiting Apprentices to build up the brotherhood in Egypt while Aya did the same in Rome.[1] The first of Bayek's recruits were his close friends and allies, such as Tahira[2] and Kensa,[3] though in time he also began inducting strangers who shared the Hidden Ones' beliefs into the brotherhood. By 43 BCE, Bayek had established the first Hidden One bureau in Memphis, where many of the brotherhood's Apprentices resided.[2]

By 38 BCE, as the Hidden Ones continued to spread their influence across the Ptolemaic Kingdom, they established another bureau near the Klysma Quarry in the Sinai, which was headed by Tahira and housed several Hidden One recruits. That year, Bayek traveled to the Sinai to aid the local Hidden Ones against the invading Roman army secretly led by the Order of the Ancients,[4] and in the process recruited two new members to the brotherhood: Shaqilat and Kawab.[5][6] After the destruction of the Klysma bureau and the death of Tahira, all the Hidden One Apprentices relocated to a new bureau in the Arsinoe Nome.[7]

By 30 BCE, the Hidden Ones had implemented a ranking system, allowing senior members of the brotherhood to be easily distinguished from newly-inducted recruits, whom they held authority over and trained.[8] Over the centuries, numerous Apprentices rose in the Hidden One hierarchy to attain ranks such as Acolyte, Master and even Mentor.[9]

Alamut[]

Basim: "Did you not know that I have been called to be initiated?"
Rebekah: "Oh? We are really initiating anyone now!"

During the 9th century, all Apprentices of the Alamut Brotherhood lived and trained at the Hidden Ones' fortress of Alamut, typically under the guidance of a senior member of the Brotherhood such as a Master Assassin. The Apprentices were given plain white robes, which they wore for the entire duration of their training, and were not allowed to carry weapons, not even a Hidden Blade, outside of the occasional sparring lessons. The Apprentices were further trained in stealth, freerunning, and taming eagles, as most Hidden Ones were assigned an eagle companion to aid them in reconnaissance.[10]

Once an Apprentice was deemed ready to become a Hidden One, they received a new set of robes and a Hidden Blade and attended a grand ceremony presided over by Alamut's ruling council, where they were officially inducted into the Brotherhood. Following this, the newly-initiated Hidden One could leave Alamut and perform field missions for the Brotherhood, though they were still required to be accompanied by at least one senior Hidden One.[11]

In 861, the young street thief Basim Ibn Ishaq was recruited to the Hidden Ones and became an Apprentice after being rescued by the Master Assassin Roshan following his accidental murder of the Caliph al-Mutawakkil.[12] After completing his training and becoming a fully fledged Hidden One, Basim traveled to Baghdad alongside Roshan and Fuladh Al Haami, where he continued to rise in the Brotherhood's ranks as he hunted the members of the Order of the Ancients active in the city.[11]

Eventually, Basim became a Master Assassin and, in his later years, took on an Apprentice of his own, Hytham, who rose to the rank of Acolyte and accompanied Basim on his extensive travels.[13] Hytham later established a new Hidden One branch in England, setting up a bureau in the Raven Clan's colony of Ravensthorpe,[14] and recruiting several of the town's inhabitants who trained under him.[15]

Masyaf[]

"Someday I will have a child – such is the way of our Order."
―Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's reflections on his family in the Codex.[src]

After the Hidden Ones were reformed as the Assassins in the 11th century, they largely stopped accepting outsiders into the Order. Instead, an Apprentice was usually born into the Order, with either one or both of their parents being an Assassin, as was the case with Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Abbas Sofian. Apprentices would begin their training from a young age, progressing through several tiers before being promoted to the rank of Assassin.[16]

Mentor's keeper 5

Altaïr and several Apprentices fighting the Templars

During the Crusades, the Levantine Apprentices primarily trained in the Masyaf fortress, which was also the Assassins' headquarters in the region, that was often attacked by Crusaders and Saracens alike.[16] Under the leadership of Altaïr in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, the Assassin Order was rebuilt with newly created techniques while past rules and restrictions were largely abandoned.[17]

Using knowledge gained from an Apple of Eden, the Levantine Assassins were eventually spread to different locations around the globe – an effort to make the Assassin Order a more global organization – with the techniques developed by their Levantine brethren becoming widely incorporated to many other Assassin branches in the process.[17]

Rome[]

Ezio: "To win this war, Machiavelli, we need loyal soldiers. By recruiting enemies of the state, we arm those who have been disarmed by the Borgia."
Niccolò: "Go then. Recruit our first novices."
—Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli, regarding Ezio's plan to recruit allies, 1501.[src]-[m]

At the dawn of the 16th century, having witnessed the overwhelming odds that the Assassins faced in Rome, as well as the citizens' oppression by those serving the Borgia, Ezio Auditore convinced Niccolò Machiavelli that they would require loyal soldiers with the strength and courage to face the forces of Cesare Borgia. Niccolò reluctantly agreed, and Ezio's recruiting efforts began.[18]

The first novices were recruited during 1501, shortly after the rescue of Caterina Sforza from the Castel Sant'Angelo. Ezio traveled throughout the city, assisting the citizens wherever and whenever he could, finding many of them either being terrorized or making a stand against the city guards.[19]

People 5

Ezio recruiting a citizen in Rome

Upon saving them from their troubles, Ezio would offer each citizen the chance to join the Brotherhood and, should they accept, he would send them to Niccolò to officially be made into an Assassin recruit. The Apprentices subsequently devoted themselves to learning the ways of the Assassin Order, driven by the desire for revenge against the Borgia for oppressing the city and its people.[19]

The Brotherhood steadily grew over time, operating with multiple recruits – both male and female – who were instructed in combat, freerunning, pickpocketing, blending, and other skills necessary for them to become fully fledged Assassins.[19]

Operating from the Tiber Island headquarters, the Apprentices were often sent on contract missions across Europe and Asia in order to improve their skills, gain first-hand combat experience, and aid the Assassin cause. When not on assignments, the Apprentices would support Ezio directly, coming to his aid whenever called upon.[19][20]

One such occurrence happened after Ezio's visit to the Thieves' Guild headquarters in August 1503. He and La Volpe learned that the Borgia knew about La Volpe's spies, an occurrence which the latter used to affirm his previous suspicions of Niccolò's treachery, given several questionable acts that Niccolò seemed to be involved with.[21] As La Volpe refused to lend Ezio the help of his thieves to save Pietro Rossi from being killed by Micheletto Corella, Cesare's personal assassin, this forced Ezio to enlist the aid of his recruits instead.[22]

Intervention 2

Ezio and his recruits during the Passion play

Discovering that Micheletto's plan was to infiltrate the play which was to be held at the Colosseum, Ezio followed him, and had his Apprentices eliminate Micheletto's men so they could take the guards' places. Disguised, the recruits and Ezio successfully infiltrated the Colosseum and foiled Micheletto's plan, with the Assassins protecting their leader from the Borgia guards as Ezio carried Pietro to safety.[23]

The Apprentices were also involved in the assassinations of Templar agents around the city, an event during which several key Borgia supporters were eliminated. Malfatto, who was responsible for the murders of several courtesans in the Centro District, and Silvestro Sabbatini, a slave trader involved in kidnapping people interfering in Borgia affairs, were both killed by Ezio's recruits on his command.[24][25]

A team of Apprentices led by Francesco Vecellio also eliminated Rocco Tiepolo, Cahin, Caha and Baltasar de Silva while working with Fiora Cavazza, a courtesan and traitor to the Borgia.[20]

Constantinople[]

"The people here are quite sick of these Templar attacks. Can you turn on your charms and find us a few more recruits?"
Yusuf Tazim asking for Ezio's help in recruiting new Assassins, 1511.[src]-[m]

In Constantinople, Ezio was able to recruit Apprentices for the Ottoman Brotherhood in a similar manner as he had done in Rome a few years previously. Some recruits were citizens that Ezio helped out by completing certain tasks, while others were saved from harassment inflicted upon them by the Byzantines.[26]

The beggars 3

Once recruited, Ezio could send these individuals out on contract missions in the Mediterranean, where they eroded Templar influence in key cities and eventually retook them for the Assassins. Ezio could also assign up to five recruits to be stationed at a reclaimed city, which helped the Assassins maintain control of it and protect the area from the Templar forces.[26]

Some citizens required that Ezio demonstrate his abilities in a race or pickpocketing challenge,[27][28] while another sought Ezio's help in protecting his family from the Byzantines.[29] Other tasks involved things such as winning a fist fight,[30] or helping a woman eliminate the Templars that had destroyed her shop.[31]

American Revolution[]

Stephane: "I said I'd buy you an ale when you first helped me. In place of drink I offer you my allegiance, for what it's worth."
Connor: "Your aid is welcome and I am grateful."
—Stephane Chapheau deciding to join the Assassins, 1773.[src]-[m]

During the American Revolutionary War, the Assassin Connor was able to recruit various citizens to his cause. These citizens were each pressured in some way by the British military.[32]

His first apprentice, Stephane Chapheau, was of French origin, and was recruited in the middle Boston area when Connor helped him fight off violent British tax collectors that attacked his home.[33] Later, Chapheau rallied other citizens before killing a man working for William Johnson with a butcher knife, stating that "he [didn't] have the right to rob the people blind."[34]

Gangs of Boston 4

Connor recruiting Duncan Little

Duncan Little was an Irishman recruited by Connor in the northern Boston area. He left Ireland due to feeling he was unwanted for being more accepting of people's faiths, and worked with Connor to stop tax men from extorting shopkeepers.[35] Clipper Wilkinson was found in the southern Boston district. He was trying to find and stop those responsible for drafting people into the British army by force.[36]

Jacob Zenger was found in the eas district of New York. He and his companions were trying to end the Martial law put in place by luring the Templar responsible out of hiding. Once the Templar was dead, Jacob joined the Assassins.[37] Jamie Colley was recruited by Connor in the west district of New York. He was trying to prevent a spread of disease across the city, particularly in the areas affected by the Great Fire of 1776.[38] Deborah Carter was recruited in the north district of New York, where she was trying to help the people against the famine. She joined the Brotherhood after the Templar responsible for hoarding food to charge exorbitant prices was killed.[39]

Each time an Assassin was recruited to the team, they would teach the group a new ability to aid Connor. Stephane Chapeau allowed assassinations and riots, Duncan Little provided bodyguarding, Clipper Wilkinson taught sniping, Jacob Zenger allowed covert escorts, Jamie Colley used ambushes, and Deborah Carter provided luring. Connor would send them to fulfill contracts across the Thirteen Colonies and Quebec, or to protect his trade convoys.[32]

Victorian London[]

"And that's one of the boys Jacob brought to train with the Brotherhood. What did we call him? ... 'Jack the lad'!—reckless and roguish, much like my brother..."
―Evie Frye on Jack, 1888.[src]-[m]

With the death of the Grand Master of the British Templars Crawford Starrick in 1868, the Assassin Jacob Frye rebuilt the declining British Brotherhood by recruiting new initiates from child labor, orphans and prostitutes. Together with the initiates and his twin sister Evie, Jacob traveled to India in order to learn the fear tactics of the Indian Brotherhood.[40]

By the time of their return to London, the initiate and former asylum occupant Jack had developed an extremist view of the Creed and usurped control of Jacob's gang the Rooks, making Whitechapel the center of his operations. In an attempt to destroy Jack's plans, Jacob sent the other initiates to assume the identity of prostitutes Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, and Catherine Eddowes. However, they were brutally murdered by Jack, earning him the pseudonym "Jack the Ripper" and marking the beginning of London's infamous Whitechapel murders.[41]

Jack then kidnapped Arthur Weaversbrook's son to pressure the journalist into publishing his letters to the public. After Jacob ordered Weaversbrook to cease his operations, Jack chased and kidnapped his former mentor, locking him beneath Lambeth Asylum.[41]

However, before Jacob's disappearance, Jacob had sent a letter to Evie regarding her return to London.[42] Sure enough, his twin sister disrupted Jack's plans and assassinated his accomplice Olwyn Owers.[43] Lured from the shadows, Jack massacred the occupants of Owers Manor and framed Evie for the crime.[44]

After more of his plans were thwarted by the Master Assassin, Jack returned to Lambeth Asylum and killed his former abusive nurse, a doctor and the asylum's director, and destroyed all of his records.[45] He lured Evie to the asylum in order to stage a 'reunion' between her and Jacob. Unfortunately for Jack, Evie defeated the inmates he had released and ended his life.[46]

Mobilization[]

Rome[]

EzioCalls

The Apprentices performing an Arrow Storm

During his own missions, Ezio was able to have up to six Apprentices support him. They would commonly operate alone or in pairs, and were often called upon to perform assassinations, engage in direct combat with an enemy, or perform Arrow Storms if he had three active signals and outright kill every targets in he range. Each time, Ezio would signal the Apprentices to strike by raising his arm and clenching his fist.[19]

When operating without their Mentor, the Apprentices would move in teams, led by a single Assassin appointed by Ezio. Together, they would complete missions across Italy, as well as the rest of Europe and beyond. One such team was led by Francesco Vecellio and notably featured Cipriano Enu, who specialized in archery, along with the stealthy Tessa Varzi, who was skilled with poisons. This team participated in the defense of Camerino, the rescue of several prisoners that Cesare Borgia was to execute merely for his entertainment, and the protection of the astronomers Novara and Nicolaus Copernicus.[20]

Although the Apprentices would not always survive their missions, should they succeed, they would return with greater skill and experience, as well as money and items that they had obtained during their travels.[19][20]

Constantinople[]

Ahged

Likewise, while in Constantinople, Ezio could send his recruits out to cities around the Mediterranean to complete contracts. At first, the cities were controlled by Templars; only by sending Assassins into the city could the Brotherhood erode the Templar influence and eventually reclaim it for the Assassins.[26]

Once reclaimed, Ezio could channel some of his income into these cities to improve their infrastructure, which in turn provided him with additional money and supplies. Assassins stationed at reclaimed cities would also receive extra training.[26]

Due to the absence of Sultan Bayezid II, the Byzantine Templars' influence in Constantinople grew to a point in which the Byzantines were able to take over several Assassin Dens located in the city. Following this, they used them as staging grounds, locked down the surrounding area, and prevented Ezio from restoring the city. Eventually however, the Assassin was able to reclaim seven Dens around the city.[26]

DenDefense1

Ezio coordinating a Den Defense

There was a possibility of the Templars attacking a Den that was already under the Assassin control. If such an event occurred, Ezio once again relied on his recruits, coordinating the defense of a contested Den from an adjacent rooftop – though he supported the recruits with his Hidden Gun when he saw the need to – but nonetheless concentrated on tactics and the placement of the Assassin units. If a recruit had risen to the rank of Assassin, they could be assigned to a Den, and after reaching the rank of Master Assassin, form a "Locked Den" that could never be taken over again.[26]

Thirteen Colonies[]

Connor's band of apprentices had numerous skills he would call them for. They could join him as a group of bodyguards or feign his arrest by disguising as soldiers, allowing him to enter forts. They could also distract guards by stealing from them, or inciting riots. They also could set up ambushes and snipe targets from afar before entering the fray. His apprentices were also trained to use the Aquila for certain contract missions.[32]

Skills and equipment[]

Mentor's return 7

Altaïr, greeted by Levantine Apprentices after his return from exile

The Apprentices during the Third Crusade primarily wore generic white robes. Under Al Mualim's rule, each rank of Assassins had a unique set of robes, with Al Mualim himself dressing fully in black.[16]

However, after Altaïr consolidated power in the Brotherhood, the rank-based clothing was discarded, with all Assassins wearing the same set of standard robes, while Altaïr himself continued to wear his Master Assassin robes for the majority of his life.[16]

The Levantine Assassins were the first Assassin branch to use most of the techniques later adopted by other Assassin branches, including air assassinations, ledge assassinations, and assassinations from hiding spots; all of which were idealized by Altaïr and Malik Al-Sayf.[16]

Nonetheless, the Levantine Assassins wielded no special equipment, only primarily being equipped with a Hidden Blade, a sword, a short blade, and throwing knives, with the amount of weaponry depending on the rank of the Assassin. On very rare occasions, an Assassin was allowed to use two Hidden Blades; however, only a limited amount of Assassins were given this privilege, as the materials required to create a Hidden Blade were scarce at the time.[17]

Sentinel P1 2

An Ottoman Apprentice performing a double assassination

The Apprentices during the 16th century were trained in a wide variety of skills and weaponry, including all the weapon types used by the previous Assassin generations, as well as heavy weapons, long weapons, crossbows, poisons, guns, and explosives. They were also capable of fighting on horseback, and unlike Ezio, Apprentices could use their pistol in conjunction with a heavy weapon.[19][20][26]

The Apprentices' armor and weaponry could be customized however they chose, allowing them to decide whether they would specialize in attack, defense, or both. Typically, an Apprentice began with basic leather armor, eventually adding several more pieces of equipment.[19][26]

As they advanced through the ranks, the armor became reinforced with metal parts, to the point that a recruit would resort to using a set of plate armor, before attaining the rank of Assassin. At that moment, the Apprentices were granted the Assassin armor, which combined the lightness of the leather set and durability of the plate armor.[19][26]

Apprentices were also given trainee robes to wear to show their affiliation to the Order. Although these were all identical, standard white robes, they were permitted to dye them a variety of colors.[19][26]

Apprentices

Ezio calling upon his Apprentices

Once inducted into the Order as full-fledged Assassins, they were given white Assassin robes, similar to Ezio's own.[19] The Ottoman Assassins were rewarded with a set of robes reminiscent of those of their leader, Yusuf Tazim, and a kilij, upon completing their training and achieving the rank of Master Assassin.[26]

During a Den defense, recruits were equipped with several types of weaponry, such as crossbows, rifles and bombs, and also utilized stationary weapons such as Greek Fire, machine guns, and cannons that were mounted on barricades, which were used to slow the Templars' advance on the fortification. Some also preferred to go directly into melee combat with the enemy, while others relied on air assassination.[26]

By the time of the American Revolution, the Assassin Order in Colonial America was nearly wiped out. When Connor began to rebuild the Order, he recruited several locals who were had grown weary of Templar oppression. Due to the fact that the Order no longer had an organized structure, the Apprentices chose their own attire, with only one of them known to wear a hood. Their equipment was not standardized either, wielding weapons ranging from a butcher knife to a Hessian Axe.[32]

Promotion[]

Main article: Initiation into the Assassin Order
"Laa shay'a waqi'un moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine. The wisdom of our Creed is revealed through these words. We work in the dark to serve the light. We are Assassins. Nothing is true, everything is permitted."
―Ezio, during the initiation of an Apprentice.[src]

During the Third Crusade, at the rank of Servant, the Apprentice would receive their Hidden Blade and have their left ring finger amputated as a way of ensuring their commitment to the Order. It also allowed for the blade to function properly.[19][26]

The practice of amputation was eventually amended by Altaïr once he attained the position of Mentor, as he saw it as a method which the Templars could exploit to identify the Assassins. The Hidden Blade mechanism was also modified to function properly without the need to remove the ring finger.[17]

Initiation Rome 1

The initiation of an Apprentice

During the 16th century in Rome, upon completion of their training, an Apprentice was formally inducted into the Assassin Order as a fully fledged Assassin. A ceremony would be held within the Tiber Island headquarters, where, as per tradition, the Apprentice's left ring finger would be branded, and they would perform a Leap of Faith from the top of the building into the Tiber river.[19]

In Constantinople, the recruits progressed in a similar manner, moving through several tiers of training and completing guild contracts. When a strong enough force of Assassins were sent to a city, they could free it from the Templars' control, allowing for greater support of Ezio's efforts in Constantinople.[26]

The Constantinople guild did not hold initiation ceremonies like its Roman counterpart. Instead, once an Apprentice reached the rank of Assassin, they could be assigned as a Den Master to one of the seven Assassin Dens in Constantinople, in which they would continue their training as a Master Assassin.[26]

The deacon P1 1

Usually during this training period, an Apprentice discovered information concerning a Templar agent operating in the area. The assassination of the agent would mark the completion of their training and promotion to the rank of Master Assassin, and their training and experience allowed them to subsequently defend their Dens from any further Templar attacks.[26]

Trivia[]

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
  • Each Apprentice's appearance and name was randomized. However, their gender was dependent on the location of the map from which they were recruited.
  • When sending Apprentices on a mission, even when the odds of success were 100%, it could sometimes fail regardless, and the Assassins used for that contract could be lost.
  • Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy included several memories that corresponded to the guild contracts in Brotherhood.
  • An Apprentice, Vitellozzo Vitelli, shared the name with an Italian condottiero, who was also a friend of Bartolomeo d'Alviano. In addition, he was a general of Cesare Borgia.
  • When managing contracts in the Tiber Island hideout or via pigeon coops, the map of Europe featured modern political boundaries.
  • Though a recruit received white robes when they reached the rank of Assassino, any changes made to their outfit color before attaining the maximum rank would still be visible on the underside of their capes.
  • If both an Assassin and Ezio attempted to assassinate the same target, they would both appear to leap on him in high profile, but Ezio would then promptly teleport onto the next closest guard, killing him as well.
  • It was possible to kill Apprentices with the Apple of Eden if they were caught within the affected area.
  • Apprentices could sometimes be heard saying "Requiescat in pace," among other such phrases to dead enemies whenever a skirmish was won.
  • Apprentices received no damage from falling, and if a guard or Ezio pushed an Apprentice into water, they would not die, but simply return to the Tiber Island hideout.
  • Even if all recruited Apprentices were female, the recruits in the memory "Exit Stage Right" would always appear as male.
  • The Apprentices would never travel alongside Ezio. Once all the targets in the area were dead, they would run out of sight and vanish.
  • Even if all other Apprentices had achieved the rank of Assassino, during the initiation ceremony, all of them would appear to wear their recruit attire.
  • If an apprentice was about to be killed by enemy guards, they would ask Ezio for help, but once they reached the rank of Assassino, they ceased fearing death or asking for aid, proclaiming, "If I am to fall, then so be it!" or "Death comes for me. But I am not afraid".
  • When an Apprentice died, Ezio could approach them, and there would be a "close eyes" option. Following this, Ezio would then kneel down and close the eyes of the Apprentice, as a sign of their last rites.
  • Even after Ezio liberated Rome from the Borgia, when recruiting a citizen, he still says 'the liberation of Roma has begun'.
  • Although there was no Hidden Gun visible on their wrists, the Apprentices had the ability to use them in combat.
  • Upon coming to the aid of a potential female recruit and successfully defeating her attackers, they appeared to be shorter in overall height and stature than Ezio by almost 4 inches (10 cm); the same height as all of the female citizens found throughout the city. However, once they donned the Recruit robes or the Assassin robes, they appeared to have grown to the same height as Ezio.
  • When apprentice reached the rank of Assassino, they would equip crossbow on their backs like Ezio though, strangely, they never used them.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
  • The appearance of the Apprentices could be customized further by allowing them to wear hoods and masks. The mask could not be worn without the hood, however. The hair color of females would also change if their uniform color was changed too.
  • If a recruit was raised to the rank of Master Assassin, they would not die in battle. Instead, they would be "injured" and were unavailable for combat or missions for 20 minutes.
  • Seven out of thirteen available Apprentices could attain the rank of Master Assassin, since it was dependent on the number of Assassin Dens in Constantinople. Elevating an Apprentice to the rank of Master Assassin involved completing a two-part mission for each Apprentice, in which they eventually eliminated a Templar agent.
  • Unlike in Rome, only one Apprentice's assassination of a Templar agent, Vali cel Tradat, was essential to complete the most essential path through Ezio's genetic memories.
  • The initiation ceremony was no longer present, even when an Apprentice attained the Master Assassin rank.
  • Once an Apprentice had been called and had dispatched nearby guards, they would always run towards the nearest Assassin Den.
  • There were four specialties that Apprentices could classify under, which were linked to their weapons of choice, being the crossbow, sword, heavy weapon or Hidden Blade. In Mediterranean Defense, some contracts required a specialist in order to be executed; for instance, the contract "Training the Mercenaries" often required an Apprentice who had specialized in heavy weapons.
  • The Apprentices recruited by Ezio in Constantinople had names belonging to various ethnicities. Most of his recruits were Osmanlı Turks or Greeks, but Ezio could also meet Italian, Hungarian, Romanian, Serb, Bulgarian, Albanian, Armenian, and Ukrainian potential recruits. This reflected the multiculturalism of the Ottoman Empire and its capital city. No Arab recruits could be found however, given that the Levant was still under Mameluke rule in 1511. The recruits' ethnicity could only be guessed through their names, the most comprehensive list of which can be found here. Their clothes were those of random citizens and women from predominantly Christians nations could be seen wearing the niqab (full Islamic veil) and vice versa.
  • Apprentices armed with a crossbow lacked any other weapons whatsoever apart from their Hidden Blade, making them not ideal in melee combat. They would also never reload their crossbow and they would always run into melee combat after killing an enemy with their crossbow.
  • Apprentices were not able to counter-attack Janissaries, even after reaching Master Assassin Rank.
Assassin's Creed III
  • Connor's apprentices could only be called upon in Boston and New York.
  • Connor was able to have floating conversations with his apprentices in taverns in both cities as well as the Frontier.
  • If an apprentice was sufficiently injured, Connor could check to see if they were alive and well, during which the apprentice would make a small joke about their current condition.
  • Despite the fact that the Apprentices possessed no visible Hidden Blade, they will sometimes perform a stealth assassination with a Hidden Blade kill animation.
  • Sword-wielding apprentices can be seen using some of Haytham Kenway's killing animations.
