Publisher's summary[]

Eivor's prisoner makes her an offer she can't refuse, leading her to the merciless mountains in search of a mysterious treasure. But she's not alone in this hunt . . . Danger lurks at every turn! Meanwhile, her brother tests out his new sword in a surprise attack![1]

Plot summary[]

Roscoe and Taras returned from the failed raid at Rygjafylke, arriving at Kjotve the Cruel's longhouse at Agder. After being informed that Eivor had taken Gull, Kjotve executed Roscoe and inquired after the whereabouts of his champion, Viggo. Bjarke Broadside said that he had already departed for the temple, to which Kjotve ordered that he'd be called back, for Gull was the key and must be recovered at all costs.

At Stavanger, Eivor and Tora Auzoux trained while Gull watched, sat under the shade of a nearby tree. Tora urged her clan-mate to use her anger in the fight. Eivor did so, venting about how her father humiliated her in front of the entire clan, threw her tribute back in her face, never showed her the honor she was due, and never saw her for who she was.

She managed to defeat Tora and as she helped her up, Gull spoke, telling the pair she could lead them "to bounty beyond the dreams of Njörðr himself", like she had for Kjotve. Tora didn't believe the slave, but Eivor saw no harm in listening to her, though she did order Gull to stop talking in riddles. Gull would not stop with her riddles, for that's how "they" spoke to her, from across the rainbow bridge. She spoke of a hoard, ready for the taking, "high on Feiknstafir's peak". Eivor decided she would go there, and asked Tora to keep her trip a secret from her father.

Eivor and Gull made their way to the top of the Feiknstafir mountains, arriving at the Temple of Heimdall. Inside, they found a group of Kjotve's Wolf Clan thugs also looking for the riches. Gull then yelled, calling attention to their location. Eivor engaged the thugs in combat before being stabbed in the back by Gull. Bjarke Broadside then took the time to boast about the attack happening then at Stavanger.

In the longhouse at Stavanger, Dag Nithisson gave Tora a mug of beer and asked why she had been preoccupied all day, linking that to the fact that Eivor was gone for days. King Strybjorn then burst in, warning the clan-mates of the attack. As they started the fight against the enemies sent by Kjotve, Styrbjorn was shot down with two arrows.

Meanwhile, Knud and Sigurd infiltrated the castle of the merchant they were told about, seeing the man and a number of guests having a banquet. Sigurd decided to wait until the wine addled the guests' minds enough that they would have an easy time stealing what they wanted.

Later, they began looting the place, but one of the guests awoke as Sigurd stole a tapestry of Yggdrasil, and he was forced to kill him. The noise caught the attention of the Hidden One Ammon, who decided to investigate. The Vikings dispatched a few guards before Ammon arrived, fatally stabbing Knud with his Hidden Blade and launching himself into a fight with Sigurd.
