Plot summary[]
2017: Juhani Otso Berg continues his research into the Assassins. This time he takes a look at Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and his immediate family - his wife Maria and son Darim. He believes love to be a weakness, with family making you a larger target to be hit - but the strength of family is about to surprise him.
1227: Xia Province, China. Altaïr, Maria and Darim survey an enemy camp. They meet a local Assassin, Qulan Gal, who explains that the camp belongs to Genghis Khan. Without any dogs on guard, he feels that a subtle approach can be possible. At night, Qulan and Altaïr head down into the camp, whilst Maria and Darim provide sniper cover with crossbows. The two eventually make it to Khan's tent, where he is placing a Sword of Eden into a chest. However, a guard spots them and raises the alarm, forcing them to flee, with Altaïr being injured in the process.
They elect to hide in a tent, where they find a fellow Assassin, Nergüi, who was captured while scouting the camp alone. Qulan scolds Nergüi for his recklessness, but also admits that his intentions were brave and honorable. After freeing Nergüi, all three manage to escape the camp and return to the waiting Darim and Maria. With the Khan so close, they discuss whether it's worth the risk of trying to assassinate him. After Maria suggests creating a distraction to flush him out, the Assassins decide to give the plan a try.
Using black powder arrows, they pepper the camp with these explosives, startling the resting horses and causing a minor stampede in the process. The camp is thrown into disarray, with the Khan electing to escape by horse with a few guards. Qulan and Darim give chase on their own horses, and take down the guards one by one until the Khan is eventually unmounted by one of Qulan's arrows. Swearing that his descendants will immortalise his legacy, the great Genghis Khan falls to a bolt fired by Darim. With more riders coming, the Assassins elect to abandon finding the Sword of Eden and make their escape.
In the aftermath, Altaïr, Maria and Darim say their goodbyes to Qulan and Nergüi as they prepare to ride back home. Qulan remarks that he always believed an Assassin's strength to lay in their independence and self-reliance, but seeing Altaïr and his family work so well together made him change his mind. He then declares that he will continue to search for the Sword of Eden and fight the Mongol Empire, and decides to take Nergüi as his apprentice.
2017: Otso Berg concludes that while family can make someone stronger and even motivate them to make difficult sacrifices for the sake of those they love, it also means everyone is a combatant and there are no innocents.[2]
