Summary[]
Roshan, Fuladh, and Nibris find themselves opposite a group of women warriors at the site of a massacre. Roshan warns the group against attacking before Nibris identifies them as the Nara people from the north of the Empire, where Endubis had raided many villages. Nibris' attempt at diplomacy with the warriors is successful after some hours, discovering they share a common cause. Igzi, the leader of the band of widows-turned-warriors, invites the trio to join their journey towards Abuna Yemata to kill General Endubis and free their children. Though Roshan remains skeptical of their chances in attacking an entire fortified army, Nibris retorts with a tale about birds and frogs working together to take down a rampaging elephant.
As morning dawns at the church, a priest tries to sway Endubis, asking to pray together, but the general rebukes the priest's faith and remained steadfast in his belief that Arwe would defend against invasions forevermore, the loss of his family and soldiers weighing heavy on his mind.
At the foot of the mountain, Igzi lays out the plan: she and her warriors will take out the guards from below loud enough to distract the others and buy the trio time to climb up to the church and find the general. With the first screams of the guards, Roshan and Fuladh begin their ascent, with Nibris following. The Hidden Ones eliminate the soldiers forcing the workers to reinforce the church's defenses, freeing them. The workers refuse to leave without saving those sick and dying, kept in a nearby guarded chamber. Roshan assassinates the guard, receiving both a warning from the workers that Endubis has lined the church walls with Greek fire, and a request from Fuladh that she stay behind and get everyone to safety. As Nibris continues to guide Fuladh to the inner church, warriors loyal to Endubis drop down on them from above, though Fuladh quickly defeats them.
At the heart of the church, Endubis muses on the Byzantines' and the Abbasids' past invasions and how his attempt at a stronghold where no outlanders could touch them has failed. With a lit torch in his hand, he approaches receptacles filled with Greek fire, saying he will awaken Arwe and destroy the church rather than let it fall to invaders, when Fuladh jumps on him to stop his actions. Endubis, however, manages to ignite one of the vases and the resulting explosion throws Fuladh back, allowing the general to unsheathe his sword and advance towards his attacker.
