Plot synopsis[]
As the Fenghuang approaches Yangon, Rupiya informs the crew that he is unable to bring them any closer to the city due to the Bago River being heavily guarded. Fortunately, Yun Pyeong-Gyu reveals that Zhang had previously established contact with a group of Buddhist monks, who offered to guide the Zhang Wei Union members into Yangon. After the monks board the Fenghuang, Shimazu Saito greets them and begins planning the crew's expedition to Yangon.
Before Saito, Yun, Edward Kenway, and John Young leave with the monks, Nagamasa informs Saito that he sent his men to contact several native people in the region who share a plight similar to theirs, in the hopes of recruiting them. Saito leaves Nagamasa in command of the Fenghuang until her return, before spotting the crew unloading several crates. Yun explains that they are the dismantled components of his latest invention, which he believes will prove useful during their mission.
Disguising themselves as monks, the Union members are able to infiltrate Yangon undetected and approach the Shwedagon Pagoda. Saito asks to take a closer look and is led by a monk to one of the smaller pagodas, as the main temple is closed to visitors. While praying to a statue of the Buddha, the monk tells Saito that the Piece of Eden housed in the Shwedagon Pagoda has the potential to cause much suffering in unworthy hands, and that he decided to help the Union retrieve it because it will be safer in their hands. After Saito claims that her motives for desiring the artifact are selfish, the monk insists that, whether she realizes it or not, Saito has brought much harmony to both herself and those around her.
Later, Saito, Edward, Yun, and John plan their infiltration of the Shwedagon Pagoda. After John suggests blending in with the monks again, Saito turns down the idea, not wishing to get the monks involved any further. Yun then reveals his third iteration of the Celestial Chariot and suggests that Saito and Edward could use it to reach the pagoda's roof and find a way in from there.
At night, while Yun and John stay behind, Saito and Edward use the hot air balloon to fly above Yangon. After Edward assures Saito that he is up for the task, the pair jump from the balloon and deploy their gliders built by Yun. Gliding towards the Shwedagon Pagoda, Edward and Saito activate a mechanism which turns the gliders into parachutes, allowing them to land safely on the roof. With the guards still unaware of their presence, the pair prepare to enter the pagoda and retrieve their prize.
