Plot synopsis[]
The Fenghuang arrives in the Sultanate of Sulu and is met by Jan van Aert's ship. However, a Suluese fleet soon surrounds the Fenghuang and fires several warning shots. Jan greets the crew and informs them that he made a deal with Sultan Badarud-Din I. Sharing a common enemy in the Spanish Empire and wishing to see its dominion over the Philippines brought to an end, the Sultanate and the Dutch East India Company joined forces, hoping to use the crescent amulet in the Zhang Wei Union's possession to gain an advantage over their rivals.
After John Young angrily calls him out for his duplicity, Jan insists that he did not betray the Union, as he still intends to continue his search for the Pieces of Eden alongside them. He then advises them to renounce the amulet for their own safety, and the crew takes some time to think the 'offer' over. John vehemently refuses to go behind Edward Kenway's back, but both Rupiya and Shimazu Saito believe they do not have much of a choice. Outnumbered, John concedes to their wishes, and the crew is escorted into Sulu after accepting Jan's proposal.
In the present, Shimazu Sei awakens from the Animus and begins to experience the Bleeding Effect, hallucinating Yuki to be a Shimazu ninja and a recently-awakened Noa Kim to be Edward. Despite having yet to make a full recovery, Noa volunteers to take Sei's place in the Animus. Sei attempts to stop him but falls to her knees, her time in the Animus having left her severely weakened.
Nathan Zhang laughs at Sei's predicament and claims that the doctor is finally experiencing what she put all of her past Animus subjects through. Sei tells him to shut up and that she does not see him trying to stop Noa, his so-called "family member", from endangering himself. Infuriated, Nathan tells Sei that she does not understand the first thing about family, and that Noa is risking his own life for Sei's because he trusts her. He then points out that Abstergo Industries has likely already tracked them down, so with time running short, Noa taking Sei's place in the Animus is the most logical option. As Noa enters the machine, Nathan warns Sei that, if they fail to save Noa's life, he will not hesitate to take hers in return.
Back in the past, Edward awakens in a prison cell in Sulu, being tended to by Xialun Qing. The doctor brings him up to speed with everything that has happened and reveals that she managed to smuggle in a knife, which she gives to him. After Edward promises to rescue all of their companions, Qing stages a distraction by banging on the cell's door and shouting that Edward is dying. Having been ordered to keep the prisoners alive, two guards enter the cell, only to be swiftly killed by Edward.
Elsewhere, Rupiya is celebrating with Jan, having convinced the latter that he hails from a royal family and joined Edward's crew for the freedom of being a pirate. Jan expresses his admiration for Rupiya's ambitions and states that, once the Dutch East India Company and the Sulu Sultanate rule the seas, they will be able to sail wherever they wish, without having to answer to anyone. As Jan turns to ask a servant for more wine, Rupiya grabs a bottle and claims that, while he once shared Jan's beliefs that lacking any sense of honor and loyalty was what made him free, that is no longer the case. He then smashes the bottle on Jan's head, knocking him unconscious.
