Plot synopsis[]
After Nagamasa asks Shimazu Saito how much she will pay him to help her exact revenge on the Shimazu clan, she remarks that she fights for a noble cause and asks Nagamasa if honor means nothing to him. The captain explains that, as a mercenary, he can not accept a job if he believes he has nothing to gain from it, and so he turns down Saito's offer. Despite this, the samurai decides to still release Nagamasa and his men, as an act of mercy from one outcast to another.
Confused by Saito's actions, Nagamasa and his men nonetheless proceed to escape from the village. Once their absence is discovered, a panicked John Young informs Saito, who feigns ignorance and tells John to calm down, as the Shimazu clan is likely already aware of their location. She then claims that "the seeds of dissent have well and truly been sown", much to John's confusion.
Shortly after, Edward Kenway arrives at the village, having regained his ability to walk, and greets his fellow crew members. However, Xialun Qing claims that Edward has still not fully recovered from the crescent amulet's effects and that the only thing keeping him sane is his sheer will. Edward puts Yun Pyeong-Gyu in charge of overseeing supplies for the Fenghuang and the crew members get to work.
On the other side of the island, Nagamasa and his men report to Fuma Sukuna, informing him where the Fenghuang crew is hiding and explaining how Saito defeated them. Sukuna is not surprised, revealing he never expected the mercenaries to stand a chance against Saito, and prepares to leave. Before he does so, Nagamasa requests a higher payment, given the enemies they are facing are no ordinary foes, and Sukuna complies, tossing the captain a gold coin as a "down payment". Nagamasa takes this as a sign that Sukuna has already decided this payment will be their last.
Back in the village, Edward volunteers to lure away the Shimazu clan while the others escape, only for Saito to push him to the ground and point out he is in no condition to fight. She then criticizes his arrogant desire to play the hero, to which Edward responds that Saito's brief authority over the crew got to her head. After Saito claims that she can always put him out of his misery and lead the crew without him, Edward activates his Hidden Blade and challenges her to try and kill him. In the end, Saito agrees to continue following Edward's lead, but first reveals that she has a task for John.
As Nagamasa and his men approach the village, they deduce that the Fenghuang crew have already left after noticing footmarks on the ground. Claiming Saito and her allies are not foolish enough to leave such an obvious trail, Nagamasa concludes that the crew hid their ship nearby and prepares to track them down. On a beach, Sukuna and his ninja watch from afar as the Fenghuang crew load supplies onto the ship. Sukuna then turns to greet the Qing Empire's Rattan Shield Company, which has been sent by Madam Lee to aid them.
