Plot synopsis[]
As Edward Kenway and Shimazu Saito observe the brainwashed natives outside the Basilica del Santo Niño, Edward points out the hypocrisy of Rajah and his resistance fighters, who claim to seek their peoples' freedom but have no issue enslaving them to further their cause. He then devises a plan to infiltrate the basilica and retrieve Hendrik's second sea log before Rajah, only for Spanish soldiers to interrupt him by arriving on the scene and fighting the brainwashed natives.
Edward rescues a young girl caught in the crossfire and brings her to safety, telling her to stay put. Saito criticizes Edward for wasting precious time, but the Assassin tells her that she will change her mind once she has a child of her own. Meanwhile, inside the basilica, Rajah and his men slaughter all the priests in their path and find Ferdinand Magellan's cross, which contains Hendrik's sea log. After retrieving the journal and using the crescent amulet to decipher its contents, Rajah orders his men to set the cross on fire.
As Edward and Saito walk into the basilica and find all the priests' bodies, they are confronted by Rajah and his warriors. Edward asks Rajah if he still considers his cause just after all the suffering he has brought upon his own people, only for the Visayan chief to claim that the Assassin has no right to judge his peoples' struggle as he is an outsider. He then orders his men to deal with Edward and Saito and exits the basilica. A group of Spanish soldiers surrounds him, but Rajah uses the amulet to mind-control them and force them to kill each other.
On the Fenghuang, John Young laments that he would have liked to accompany Edward to Cebu and that he has barely seen any action since Saito joined the crew. Rupiya advises him not to pray for dangerous situations before John suddenly sports a large fleet approaching Cebu. Upon closer inspection, he realizes the ships belong to Rajah's men and decides to attack them, telling Rupiya to ready the crew.
