Plot synopsis[]
Xialun Qing explains to a stunned Edward Kenway that the natives who found her after she became stranded in Monkey Island's jungles brought her back to their village and treated her as a guest; in exchange, she has been treating their sick and wounded. A worried John Young rushes into the cabin to check on Qing, but she reassures him that she is fine. She then points out that the villagers have been scared "half to death" by Edward and John's sudden intrusion, prompting the Assassin to question if they are the "villains" in this situation.
Meanwhile, the Fenghuang's crew recovers from their battle with Rajah's warriors, which they barely won thanks to Yun Pyeong-Gyu's multi-barreled muskets. A crewman informs Shimazu Saito that they have tied up the surviving native warriors, including one of the "Manananggals" that attacked them, though upon closer inspection, they discover that it was just a warrior in disguise. Yun is surprised by this revelation and questions how the man displayed such incredible, almost supernatural strength, to which Saito explains that it was the result of the crescent amulet's powers.
Having now witnessed the amulet's abilities first-hand twice, Saito understands why the elders of her clan and their rivals were so obsessed with acquiring it, and fears what might happen if anyone were to find all three artifacts. Just then, a lookout informs the crew that more native warriors are approaching the Fenghuang on boats, prompting Saito to order the crew to sail into the open sea to escape their assailants.
Back in the village, the chief's son, whom Edward had punched earlier, argues with his father about the latter's decision to let the Zhang Wei Union members stay as guests, claiming that they are no different from the Spanish, Qing, or Japanese outsiders occupying their lands. Meanwhile, Qing informs Edward and John that, ever since Rajah's resistance group occupied Monkey Island, they have been forcefully recruiting villagers to their ranks, leaving behind only women, children, and the elderly.
At that moment, a woman comes back to the village, running from a "Manananggal" pursuing her. John shoots the monster, causing its mask to fall off and revealing it is one of the villagers forcefully recruited into the resistance. Edward uses his blowpipe to incapacitate the man, who is taken into the cabin for medical attention. The chief then informs Edward that there are more men like him on the island, patrolling the jungles in search of prey. The Assassin suspects these men are under the crescent amulet's effects and resolves to help them.
