Plot synopsis[]
As Spanish soldiers arrive to put a stop to the Manila riot, they witness the monk leading the revolt gathering his followers in front of the Manila Cathedral. While the protesters set up a bonfire, the monk addresses the crowd, declaring that they will "cleanse" the land of all "non-believers", beginning with Governor-General Toribio José Cosio y Campo and all of his supporters. He then uses his crescent amulet to impel the crowd to attack the soldiers.
Watching from the rooftops, Edward Kenway tells Shimazu Saito that they must hurry and take the amulet from the monk, but before they proceed, Saito asks Edward why the Assassins seek the Pieces of Eden. Edward goes on to explain that, ever since their founding as the Hidden Ones in the 1st century BCE, the Brotherhood has been fighting against people who would use the power of the Pieces to subjugate humanity. He then recounts the history of the Pieces, from Adam and Eve's theft of an Apple of Eden to various heroes of legend and prophets using the Pieces to perform miracles and defeat entire armies.
Now understanding the danger these artifacts pose, Saito agrees with Edward that they must be kept out of the wrong hands and joins the Assassin in confronting the monk and his followers in an alley. Edward demands that the monk hand over his amulet, claiming it is not meant for human hands, but the latter refuses to give up a "sacred relic of God" and orders his followers to kill Edward and Saito. The Assassin and samurai easily kill most of the monks, but their leader uses the amulet to resurrect them.
Elsewhere, a group of Visayan warriors emerge from the water. As they approach Manila, their leader declares that it is time to recover their stolen treasure and honor Lapu-Lapu's legacy.

Behind the scenes[]
When Edward sees the resurrected monks for the first time, he comments "You know what they say about the Spanish Inquisition." This is a reference to a recurring sketch from the British comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus, in which a group of cardinals suddenly enter mundane scenes and announce "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!" The sketch has since gained popularity as an internet meme, used to highlight the unexpected nature of a situation, as is the case here.
During Edward's narration of the Pieces of Eden's history, multiple artifacts from throughout the franchise make appearances, including the Apple of Eden 6, the Sword of Eden 1, the Papal Staff of Eden, the Scepter of Aset, a Crystal Skull, the Ankh, a Ring of Eden and the Koh-i-Noor. During the same sequence, Ezio Auditore is shown assassinating Rodrigo Borgia to obtain the Apple of Eden 6, which contradicts the events of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
