Plot synopsis[]
Aboard the Fenghuang, Jan van Aert talks to Edward Kenway and reveals that he is aware of the Assassin's search for a treasure in the Philippines, surprising him. He goes on to explain that Hendrik reported to him directly and told him about his investigation into Angkor's legend, which Jan initially dismissed as little more than a "fairy tale". However, he changed his mind after learning that the Zhang Wei Union are pursuing that very same fabled treasure and decided to join them on their expedition, believing it will make for a great adventure.
Later, while the Union members are having lunch, Shimazu Saito questions Edward's decision to let Jan accompany them. The Assassin explains that, given the strength of Madam Lee's fleet, they will need the Dutch East India Company's protection, even if there is a possibility that Jan will betray them once they find Angkor's treasure. He also claims that, given the Union's partnership with the company, it is best to avoid stirring up trouble with them, or else Zhang may face the consequences.
Inside his laboratory on the Fenghuang, Yun Pyeong-Gyu successfully recreates the formula for Greek fire, but claims that he will require large quantities of petroleum to produce more. Edward mentions that Java's inhabitants use petroleum to waterproof their ships and suggests making a stop there en route to the Philippines. However, he then hears a commotion and rushes to the deck, finding that both the Fenghuang and Jan's ship are under attack by two Spanish Men o' War. While most of the crew panics, Edward deduces that the Spanish are only firing warning shots and decides to wait and learn their intentions.
Sure enough, a Spanish official soon boards the Fenghuang and declares that the crew are to surrender all their weapons and come to Manila per Governor-General Toribio José Cosio y Campo's orders. Edward, pretending to be a merchant, questions why they are being targeted, to which the official responds that it is due to their association with the Dutch East India Company. In Manila, the Union members and Jan's crew are arrested by soldiers; when Edward asks Jan what he did to upset the Spanish, the navigator claims that he is just as clueless as him. Moments later, the Governor-General's representative arrives and accuses Jan of engineering Governor Fernando Manuel de Bustillo Bustamante y Rueda's assassination five years prior.
