Plot synopsis[]
While Zhang and Rupiya go around Batavia looking for seafarers to recruit to the Zhang Wei Union's cause, Edward Kenway, Shimazu Saito, and Jan van Aert head to a tavern frequented by pirates. Immediately, Edward kicks over a table and addresses all the patrons, informing them that their way of life is being threatened by factions seeking to rob them of their hard-earned freedom. He then declares that he will not let tyranny triumph and asks who will stand by his side.
All the pirates raise their cups and cheer for Edward while the Assassin continues his speech, claiming that life without liberty is not worth living and that together they will fight to safeguard humanity's free will. The pirates continue to cheer and affirm that they will fight with Edward while an amused Jan remarks that only Edward could have united Batavia's pirates under a common cause.
A few days later, Yun Pyeong-Gyu oversees the last upgrades to the Fenghuang while the Zhang Wei Union's newly assembled fleet prepares to set sail. As the dozens of ships flying under the same flag depart Batavia, Edward, standing atop the Fenghuang's mast, looks towards the horizon. With both the Union's banner and a black flag sporting the Assassin insignia flying behind him, Edward declares that, if this is going to be his last ever voyage, then he "picked a damned fine one to go out on".
In the present, Nathan Zhang receives an alert on his phone from DedSec informing him that Abstergo Industries has discovered his and Noa Kim's location and dispatched Sigma Team to eliminate them. Moments later, a gunshot narrowly misses Nathan's head, hitting a lantern. Nathan orders his men to get Noa out of the Animus and prepares to fight against their assailants, only to be caught off-guard when two Abyss Walkers drop from the roof.
Suddenly, Noa awakens and fires his Phantom Blade at one of the Abyss Walkers, then incapacitates the other with his electric shock baton bracer. After Nathan thanks him for saving his life, an annoyed Noa remarks that Nathan should've been the one looking after him, not the other way around. The Assassin claims that the attack caught him by surprise, but now he is ready to fight alongside Noa. With that, the two exit their cabin and quickly dispatch all the Sigma Team operatives outside; Nathan shooting them with his pistol while Noa subdues them with his bracer.
As Noa, Nathan, and the latter's men make their way to where they left their seaplane, they are shocked to find it in flames. Furthermore, the burning plane is surrounded by the dead bodies of several Sigma operatives. Standing over them is a man wearing dark robes and wielding two bloody Hidden Blades: an Assassin.
