Plot synopsis[]
While waiting for Edward Kenway and the others to return, the remaining Fenghuang crew members are attacked by three East India Company ships. Rupiya curses Nagamasa for leaving just prior to the assault and assumes that he betrayed them, but resolves to fight the attacking vessels anyway. While Rupiya rallies the crew for battle, Edward and Shimazu Saito witness the East India Company's attack and prepare to join their fellow Zhang Wei Union members. At that moment, however, John Young reveals himself, holding an unconscious Yun Pyeong-Gyu hostage with a pistol to his head.
Seeing that John has stolen the Piece of Eden recovered from the Shwedagon Pagoda, Saito is shocked by his betrayal and prepares to attack him, but John threatens to shoot Yun if she makes a move. Edward is not as surprised by this turn of events and merely mentions that John finally decided to show his "true colors". Briefly taken aback, John asks how long Edward knew that he was a spy for the East India Company, to which the Assassin reveals what Tessa told him back in Singapore: that the Templars had devised a plot to kill him with the help of a double agent within his inner circle.
While John remains silent, Edward claims that he feigned ignorace to John's affiliations because he hoped that their friendship was genuine and that John would make the right choice in the end. With tears in his eyes, John lashes out at Edward, revealing that he would have loved nothing more than to forget about the Templars and enjoy his new life with the Zhang Wei Union. However, this changed after Xialun Qing's death, which a heartbroken John blames Edward for, claiming that she would still be alive if the Assassin had accepted his fate.
After John reveals that the Templars promised him a way to bring Qing back to life using the Pieces of Eden's powers, Edward asks if he really thinks that the Templars will keep their word. John angrily states that he does not care and that Qing was his only reason to live, so he will do everything in his power to try and resurrect her, regardless of what happens to him. Having heard enough, Saito tries to attack John, but at that moment a cannonball strikes the ship, destroying it and causing Edward, Saito, John, and Yun to fall into the Yangon River.
While Edward saves Yun from drowning, John is picked up by East India Company soldiers in a rowboat. One of the Company ships then prepares to open fire on Edward, Saito, and Yun, only to be chased away by Nagamasa and his men. As the ship retreats, John informs its captain that he has acquired the second Piece of Eden, as well as information about the location of the third artifact. He then insists that he will deliver the information to the Templar Grand Master in person, and the captain acquiesces to his request.
Elsewhere, a Company soldier reports to Alan Jacob, informing him that their spy has successfully secured the second Piece of Eden. Alan instructs the soldier to order their fleet to set sail, so that they may retrieve the spy and the artifact. The soldier complies, addressing Alan as "Grand Master".

Behind the scenes[]
After being saved by Edward from drowning, Yun promises to "never let go" of the plank of wood he is holding on to in order to stay afloat. This is likely a reference to the ending of the 1997 film Titanic, where Rose DeWitt Bukater, while floating on a piece of debris, promises Jack Dawson that she will never let go of him as the latter slowly dies of hypothermia.
