Plot synopsis[]
While Shimazu Sei succumbs to the Piece of Eden's illusions, Noa Kim experiences his own trial created by the artifact to test if he is worthy of claiming it. Finding himself in a white void, Noa, still believing himself to be Edward Kenway due to the Bleeding Effect, is approached by an apparition of Bartholomew Roberts, who begins to taunt him. When "Edward" claims that he is in no mood for Roberts' mockery, the Sage reveals that he does not want to talk to Edward, but to Noa.
As Noa regains his sense of self, Roberts tells him that the time has come to face who he truly is. Just then, Noa finds himself equipped with Edward's Phantom Blade while the Roberts apparition turns into Edward, who challenges his descendant to a fight. As Noa struggles to defend against Edward's attacks, the Assassin tells him that their fight could go on forever, since all of Noa's skills came directly from him.
Meanwhile, outside the Shwedagon Pagoda, Yuki surveys the area with a drone while Nathan Zhang and his men continue their shootout against the soldiers. Just then, a number of helicopters arrive at the pagoda and drop off Sigma Team, who prepare to commence their hunt for Noa and Sei. Nathan remarks that the Abstergo agents tracked them down sooner than he expected, but nonetheless prepares to fight them.
Back in the void, Noa decides to stop fighting Edward, having realized that this is not the point of the trail. He then claims that the Edward apparition is just a reflection of himself and that he will not fight or deny who he is anymore. Satisfied that Noa passed its first test, the Piece of Eden commences its next trail, projecting illusions of Noa's various ancestors: Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Ezio Auditore, and Ratonhnhaké:ton. As the artifact questions if Noa will defend the Creed passed down through generations of his blood or will try to satisfy his own greed, it takes the form of the object of Noa's greatest desire: his father.
Although surprised to see his father, Noa denies that learning the truth about him is his greatest wish. He then admits that, while he struggled his entire life with not knowing his roots, this is no longer the case and he does not care who or what his father was. Claiming that Edward's memories have taught him that nothing is true and everything is permitted, Noa resolves to forge his own path, no longer looking into the past for answers and instead going wherever life takes him because he has the freedom to choose his destiny.
Satisfied with the response, the Piece of Eden ends the trial and all its illusions vanish as the glowing artifact reveals itself. Soon, the entire room becomes engulfed in a golden light, and Noa is approached by Edward, whose consciousness has been transported into the future. Speaking across centuries, Edward is glad to know that his descendant learned the same lesson he did and assures Noa that he will keep fighting for the future, so that the present Noa knows will come to pass. He then asks Noa if he can keep up with him a while longer, but the latter responds that he is done keeping up with everyone else and that he will start carving out his own path alongside the people he cares about. With that, Noa grabs the Piece of Eden while declaring that he is ready for whatever the future has in store.
