Asajiro (died 1582) was a Japanese gunsmith who lived and operated in Sakai during the 16th century alongside his brother Yakichi.
Biography[]
In 1582, Asajiro, wishing to increase their wealth and improve their lives, use his brother's mon to acquire forged trading contracts, thirty bars of silver for the Portuguese of Nagasaki" or "a shipment of Tanegashima teppo" for Oda Nobunaga and present them to Imai Sokun and his father Sokyu, who were at at the top of the Sakai's ruling class. He had hoped that contracts would open up their pathway to success and be a stepping stone to gaining higher status. Yakichi, however, expressed doubt as Sokun knows him personally and would find it hard to believe he had the ability to acquire these contracts. In turn, Asajiro argued that they would succeed as one of the contracts bears the seal of Nobunaga.[1]
The two brothers' dispute was overheard by the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe, who asked that they hand over the contracts. When Asajiro demanded that she pay five hundred mon in return, Naoe refused and threatened them. This caused the two brothers to split up and run away. As Asajiro had the contracts with him, he was hunted and killed by Naoe, who then acquired his contracts and stole his plans for herself.[1]
