Andronikos II Palaiologos (1259 – 1332), usually Latinized as Andronicus II Palaeologus (Greek: Ανδρόνικος Παλαιολόγος) reigned as Byzantine Emperor from 1282 to 1328. He was the son and immediate successor of Michael VIII Palaiologos, and was his father's junior co-emperor from 1272.
Biography[]
During his reign, the Empire only held a fraction of its former territory and influence, and declined even further.[1] After the First Palaiologan Civil War that resulted in Andronikos' forced abdication in 1328, he retired to a monastery where he remained for the last four years of his life.[2]
