Alfred Stearns (born c. 1930) is a member of the Inner Sanctum of the Templar Order and a retired employee of Abstergo Industries. Following his retirement, he was replaced as Head of Operations by fellow Inner Sanctum member Laetitia England.

Biography[]

The Great Purge[]

In 2000, Stearns personally oversaw the "Great Purge", an operation to exterminate all Assassin camps and safehouses, following the return of the Templar sleeper agent Daniel Cross to Abstergo's Philadelphia facility.[1]

Using Daniel's memories obtained from him via interrogation, Stearns sent teams of Templars dressed in military fatigues to the various Assassin hideouts Daniel had visited. In Philadelphia, the Taurus team discovered a hidden chamber underneath an Assassin safehouse disguised as a Chinese laundromat.[1]

Simon Hathaway's induction[]

In October 2016, Stearns was present at Simon Hathaway's induction into the Inner Sanctum and watched his presentation for a new direction to the Historical Research Division, and in turn, the Templar Order. Ten days later, he was present at another meeting with the members of the Inner Sanctum, which was interrupted by Hathaway, causing some tension among the members.[2]

Stearns and the others listened to Hathaway's retelling of the Sword of Eden's history, Hathaway's ancestor and Jacques de Molay's vision for the Templar Order. None of the Inner Sanctum members moved for the Sword and Stearns remained silent along with Alan Rikkin, David Kilkerman and Álvaro Gramática after having witnessed the Sword of Eden activated. The meeting ended with laughter after Rikkin asked for his sword back.[2]

Meeting the Black Cross[]

Stearns in Quebec

In March 2017, the Inner Sanctum invited the new Black Cross to a meeting in Quebec, during which Stearns was present. Displeased that the Black Cross auto-proclamed himself their inquisitor, they threatened him and demanded to know his identity. The masked man responded that he came only as a courtesy, to inform them that he was investigating an hostile fifth column within the Order. After affirming his independence, the Black Cross dropped a smoke bomb and disappeared.[3]

Personality and traits[]

Stearns viewed Daniel Cross as Abstergo's asset. Despite the objections of Dr. Sung, he was willing to risk Cross' life, in order to gain information required for the start of the Great Purge.[1] At the Quebec meeting, after the Black Cross had invited himself in, Stearns remained silent and stoic throughout.[3]
