Alera is an Assassin. She was the partner of Colm[1] and the current partner of Joey.[2]
Biography[]
At one point in late-November 2022,[3] Colm intercepted the museum security guard Joey while they was being pursued by Templars after they found a mysterious Isu dagger blade. Knowing the danger they both were in, Colm brought Joey to a secure basement filled with servers connected to an Animus, where Alera was waiting. She gestured for Joey to get on the Animus, explaining that they would experience the lives of certain people whose genetic memories they had extracted from various individuals. Joey recalled that animus was Latin for 'mind', and Alera was seemingly impressed, adding that it also meant spirit, consciousness, courage, and even anger. Joey laid down on the machine as Alera started it, placing Joey into the role of someone who had contact with that same artifact long ago.[1]
Joey resurfaced from the Animus to the voice of Alera saying they had to pull them out because their technology was a little temperamental, a statement punctuated by a shower of sparks erupting above her. She barely flinched, already accustomed to it, before leaving to get a new fuse. She returned to the room to hear Joey ask about symbols on a paper Colm had given them, which she informed them were from an ancient language, before replacing the fuse.[4]
The next day, as Joey arrived, Alera threw them a metal cylinder, which they managed to catch, impressing even her and making Colm and Alera share an alarmed look, suspecting they was showing signs of the Bleeding Effect. Joey managed to figure out that the blade was taken by the Hidden Ones to London, and Alera was worried that they only had one available memory in London even close to the time, from the Viking longship captain Alva.[5]
In Alva's memories, there was an encounter with an Isu called Vejovis, and Joey asked if Colm or Alera knew who he was, to which Colm responded that they had no records of an Isu with that name but Alera mentioned they had one under ⟨V⟩. Colm proceeded to say that Vejovis was not to be trusted, as Isu objectives were often far beyond human understanding. Alera told Joey to get some rest and, while heading out, Joey saw a hallucination of Eivor Varinsdottir and responded to it.[5]
The next morning, Alera and Colm discussed Joey's symptoms the next morning but stopped talking when they entered the Animus chamber. Alera mentioned they would send them into the memories not of someone in Damascus, but into the memories of a Levantine Assassin at Masyaf and that they should try and ignore the instructions their host was given and head to Damascus to find the place known only as "The Hideout". Joey asked how he could change the simulation's events so drastically, and Alera replied that if things went to plan, they would not have to, before starting the Animus and sending Joey into the memories of Faisal.[6]
Joey had no problem reliving the memories, but when Faisal happened to see his own reflection, Joey was so startled that he lurched upwards and out of the Animus, for he saw Faisal with Vejovis' face. Colm asked Alera if it was a glitch, with the systems bleeding over from one simulation to another, but she responded that it did not work that way and that if Joey saw Vejovis, it meant he was there. Colm pondered if that meant Faisal was a Sage, and Alera explained to Joey what that meant, including that the simulation could have confused Faisal's genetics with Vejovis' which would explain the identical face. Joey asked if Malcolm was a Sage and Alera said that it was likely before Joey informed them that the blade went to Constantinople and he was going to rest.[6]
The next day, Alera greeted Joey with warmth, to which they responded aggressively before apologizing. Alera brushed it off, saying such behavior was almost expected because the Animus tended to seep into one's mind the more it was used. At that point, Colm entered the room and diagnosed Joey as suffering from the Bleeding Effect, where the memories they had been reliving were blending into their own. The Assassin pair had hoped that they would avoid the disorder's symptoms by keeping each hosts' memories as short as they could, but the condition had progressed with unprecedented speed even with brief memories. Joey was unsure how to proceed, but Alera insisted it was more imperative than ever that they found the blade's missing half.[7]
From the next memory they relived, Joey discovered that the blade was in the vault beneath the Basilica di San Marco and told Colm as he came out of the simulation.[7] Soon after, Alera learned that the Templars were coming for them and deduced that Joey had betrayed them, not suspecting Colm due to having worked with him for a long time. She held a pistol to Joey's forehead and warned her partner of the incoming Templars, only for Colm to throw a hard drive at her head as she tightened her finger on the trigger, allowing Joey to strike her with a roundhouse kick. Colm asked Alera to repeat herself, then pinned the blame of the incoming Templar attack on her before saying the trio needed to head to Venice as soon as possible.[2]
Alera managed to get herself to the vault, now knowing who the traitor was. Joey managed to keep Colm's attention on them for long enough for Alera to enter the vault room and assassinate him. With the threat averted, Joey put the two halves of the blade together, causing a blinding flash of light to erupt. After Joey said Vejovis' name out loud, a hologram of the Isu appeared, congratulating Joey on bringing the two parts of the dagger together and making it possible for him to become corporeal again. Alera tried to attack the hologram, but Vejovis made Joey swipe at her before revealing that they were one of his Sages and that by reliving the memories of his other Sages and connecting the blades, Vejovis' being would bleed into Joey's before long. To stop this process from happening, Joey separated the blade, shattering one half of it, and destroyed the part of the pedestal that the hologram was coming from. After that, Joey and Alera decided to leave before the Templars arrived, with Joey taking the intact half of the blade. As they left the basilica, Alera offered Joey a job with her, which they accepted.[2]
