Ahmad ibn Tulun (835 – 884) was the founder of the Mamluk Tulunid dynasty that ruled Egypt and Syria between 868 and 905. Originally a Turkic slave-soldier who served in the Abbasid Caliphate, Ahmad was sent to Egypt as governor and later established himself as an independent ruler, taking over governance of the state from Ibn al-Mudabbir.

Biography[]

After gaining goverance of Egypt in 868, Ibn Tulun founded the short-lived capital of Al-Qata'i with the objective of rivaling Alexandria as a center of knowledge and surpass Samarra as a seat of power. To ensure his plans come to fruition, Ibn Tulun established numerous trade routes, including one with the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Dublin in Ireland.[1]
