Aelfgar was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman who served as a thegn in Lincolnshire during the 9th century. He was a friend of the shire's ealdorman Hundbeorht and in turn his son Hunwald.
Biograpy[]
Meeting Eivor Varinsdottir[]
In 875, at the village hall at Botolphston, Aelfgar chastised his lord's heir Hunwald at his drunken and loft claims that the Kingdom of Lindsey would rise again. He remind Hunwald that his line of kings died out long ago, and that they resided in Lincolnshire now. Asking in jest if Hunwald needed a map to know where he was. They were then interrupted with the arrival of the Raven Clan shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, who had traveled to the region on request of Hunwald to find allies and needed to speak with the ealdorman Hundbeorht.[1]
After Hunwald order more ale for the table, Aelfgar and Eivor listened to his plan. Neither Aelfgar nor Eivor were particularly convinced, Eivor herself only wanted to talk to his father after all, nevertheless they both accepted. After a brief disagreement with Eivor and some other patrons, Hunwald was attacked outside the hall. Aelfgar watched Eivor come to his rescue and when Hunwald proclaimed his House's first victory of many, he simply nodded through his disagreement. Eivor and Hunwald then left Aelfgar for Lincoln.[1] Before they left, Aelfgar spoke briefly with Eivor inside the longhouse about the need for strong leadership and dreading the possibility of Hunwald becoming ealdorman.[2]
