Advi (died 822) was the Prince of Thatta's bodyguard and Roshan's combat instructor.
Biography[]
In 819, while tasked to escort the prince's newest employee and inventor Bakhit, Advi warned him and his assistant Roshan to be careful due to the bandits on their route. Throughout the escort to Thatta, Advi trained his men with tahtib sticks, which caught the attention of Roshan. He explained that tahtib fighting was a custom and a way to deal non-lethal blows, something he strove never to break. Despite Bakhit's protest, Roshan joined Advi, learned under him, and had improved her techniques within a month. After arriving at Bakhit's new residence and allowing him to settle in, Advi continued training Roshan during her off-time away from being Bakhit's assistant.[1]
For the next two years, Advi kept sparring with Roshan and soon developed romantic feelings for her. One night, Roshan startled him when she entered a hut and disturbed its wind chimes, prompting Advi to restrain her and hold a dagger to her neck, thinking she was an intruder. Relieved, Advi told her he had been switched to night duty before she tripped him, starting a nighttime sparring match. During their fight, Advi informed Roshan that their duel was also known as ritual of love and made an advance towards her, though she rebuffed him and they both sat in silence afterward.[2]
When Roshan left for home, Advi followed her and saw a stranger wearing one of Bakhit's inventions around their neck. Entering Roshan's house unannounced, his intrusion results in her now threatening him with a dagger. He is unconcerned, however, and tells her that her mentor was forfeiting on an exclusive deal he had made with the prince and advised her to be careful.[2]
A year later, Advi felt compelled to reward Roshan on her improvements and mastery of her skills. After sparring with her, he gifted her with an enhanced light sword and a small, thick dagger. Along with the pair of gifts, Advi also handed her a unique set of tahtib sticks designed by Bakhit himself. Although Roshan told him she loved them, Advi did not pursue his feelings for her due to seeing her stop herself. Throughout the year, Advi practiced Roshan's swordplay while keeping himself at bay on his romantic feelings.[3]
Death and legacy[]
One evening, Advi intruded into Roshan's room, broke a vase, and informed her the prince's guards were coming to arrest Bakhit and execute his staff for violating the prince's contract. While he waited for Roshan to tell the staff, the prince's guards barged into the house and arrested Bakhit, forcing Roshan and Advi to escape early over the estate's walls. Venturing through Thatta, both of them made their way through the city until Advi was spotted by his fellow guards, who then interrogated him for Roshan's location. Refusing to betray where she hid, Advi's former comrades slit his throat and searched elsewhere. This gave Roshan the chance to flee, thanking Advi for his sacrifice.[3]
After Bakhit's arrest, Roshan joined up with Maryam, one of his clients who was a madame of a traveling caravan. Although in a stable position hired as Maryam's bookkeeper, Roshan was traumatized over losing Advi and regularly had nightmares of herself being the cause of his death. Fortunately, the caravan's women consoled and cared for her. Ultimately, she was thankful for Advi's sacrifice, as it allowed her the chance to travel and experience all the things she had once read about in the House of Wisdom or dreamed of in the past.[4]
Personality and traits[]
Advi was a tall man with long arms and a symmetrical face.[1]
Skills and equipment[]
Advi typically used twin tahtib sticks for his training but could also dual-wield a sword and a dagger in open combat.[1]
