""Flood?" Is that supposed to be a joke? On account of the length of my pants?"
―Adrien Flood.
AC4MP-CA-Cutthroat

Adrien Flood

Adrien Flood was an Irishman who, for a short while, grew up at an orphanage in Cork, where he had been left when he was an infant. At the age of eight, Adrien escaped and stowed away on a ship bound for the West Indies, which was soon attacked by Kumi Berko's pirates. Recruited into Kumi's crew, Adrien earned his place as a deckhand and later a spy, using his nimbleness and small size to get into hard-to-reach places, allowing him to procure valuable information.[1]

As Adrien grew older, a more obnoxious personality began to emerge. Sarcastic and impertinent, he started to display a sadistic streak and was put to work as a torturer and a disciplinarian.[1]

In 2013 under the name of the Cutthroat, his genetic memories were used as an Animi Avatar by the Abstergo Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Templar company Abstergo Industries, to influence the general public via the Animus game console.[1] In the game's fictional audio clip of an interview with Adrien, the pirate repudiates his surname "Flood" as though he is embarrassed by it while also claiming that he once defeated five men with a single fart.[2]

Trivia

  • Adrien is a French variant of the name Hadrian, from Hadrianus, Latin for "from Hadria".
  • In his file in the Abstergo Data of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag multiplayer, Adrien Flood denies that his name is Flood, suspecting that Kumi Berko was the one who told the interviewer that. Though this file presents an audio clip of an interview Adrien partakes in, it is suggested to be fictional in the Assassin's Creed universe itself because the authenticity of several other characters' files is impossible; several explicitly reference their deaths while Blackbeard criticizes modern American pop cultural stereotypes of pirates.
    • It is therefore not known if the real Adrien in the lore truly is embarrassed by the name Flood and whether it actually is Kumi who invents the name to tease Adrien's pants. This also casts doubt not only on Adrien's claim that he "felled five men with a single fart", but on whether or not the real Adrien himself actually made or would have made such a claim.
