Abe no Nakamaro (阿倍 仲麻呂; c. 698 – c. 770), also known by his adopted Chinese name Chao Heng (晁衡),[1] was a Japanese scholar and poet who served as an envoy to the Tang dynasty and subsequently governor of the province of Annam.
A friend of the Chinese poet Li Bai and monk Jianzhen, he went to China in search of Pieces of Eden. Over the course of the An Lushan Rebellion, Abe no Nakamaro sent a series of letters to his friend recounting his failed attempt to return home to Japan, his investigations into the Golden Turtles, and contemporaneous political events.
