A Skald's Lament was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[]
Eivor came across a rambling man and a worried woman.
Dialogue[]
Southwest of the Alcestre Monastery, Eivor came across a couple at a campsite. She spots the man mumbling to himself, worrying his wife.
- Norse Man: I am one with the earth! With the air and water, and fire, and... What is the other? Clouds! Tree bark. What is that smell?
Eivor approached the couple.
- Norse Woman: Do you think you can stop him? Because I cannot.
Some help over here? This skald had the bright idea to alter his mind.
Eivor talked to the man.
- Eivor: Easy, friend. I think you may have eaten something that did not agree with you--
- Norse Man: Today my saga is writ! Glory!
Ah! A brave steed has swept me up! Onward, to my loyal companion!
The man ran off up the hill.
- Eivor: If I don't stop him, something or someone less forgiving will. I should stay close by, wait for him to tire.
Worried for his safety, Eivor followed him from behind.
- Norse Man: I have the strength of one thousand Thors! I cannot be stopped!
They approached near a bandit camp in the woods.
- Norse Man: This victory I will add to my growing saga!
The man ran inside the bandits, triggering the bandits who came to attack him. Eivor drew her arms to defend the man against them.
- Norse Man: I may throw up, I may throw up, ugh!
I will take on any challenger, be it on two legs or four! Show yourselves to me, if you dare!
Am I crying?
There is no fight I will flee! And should the gods answer my call, so be it! They too will feel my wrath!
Eivor cleared the camp of the bandits and spoke to the man.
- Eivor: You keep this up, you're going to get yourself killed. Are you hearing me?
- Norse Man: Yah! Loud and clear! Now stand aside so that I may fulfill my destiny! Yah!
Soon after, the man collapsed on the floor.
- Eivor: I'm going to have to drag you back myself, eh?
Eivor picked up the man.
- Norse Man: Jeska. Where are you? I must find my way back to you!
With the man carried on her back, Eivor made her way back to the campsite.
- Norse Man: O, if my mother could see me now...
My saga is complete and it is the envy of all who came before and all who are yet to come!
In time, Eivor reached the camp site and put the man down on the floor before speaking to his wife.
- Eivor: Your skald.
- Norse Woman: Gods! Is he dead?
- Eivor: No, but he should be. Seems the gods disagree this time. Splash water in his face, and keep your distance. He'll throw up something fierce.
- Norse Woman: Thank you for the advice, and for your trouble... which is now my problem...
Outcome[]
Eivor protected the man and brought him back his camp.
