Æthelwulf (died 858) was King of Wessex from 839 to 858. The son of King Ecgberht, Æthelwulf became a member of the Order of the Ancients, eventually rising to the position of Grand Maegester.
During his rule, he arranged for the marriage of Birstan of Wessex to Estrid of Francia, seeking to strengthen the ties between the two nations, though by 875 the couple fell to fighting with each other in an unhappy union.[1]
Upon his death, his title of Grand Maegester was transferred to his children who succeeded him as King of Wessex, including Aethelred, and ultimately Aelfred. Unlike his father, Alfred did not agree with the Order's ideology, and worked to dismantle it and replace it with a new universal order.[2]
