AC4 Canto marinaresco

Un canto marinaresco.

I canti marinareschi sono dei canti di lavoro che ebbero larga diffusione tra coloro che lavoravano a bordo di grandi imbarcazioni a vela. Le canzoni marinaresche avevano la funzione di mantenere alto il morale della ciurma e di rendere meno pesante il lavoro, soprattutto nei grandi velieri con ciurma ridotta e laboriose mansioni.

Storia[]

Fortemente influenzati dalle canzoni degli schiavi afroamericani, i canti marinareschi attinsero anche da altre forme musicali come marce militari e canzoni popolari. Il primo riferimento ai canti marinareschi si ha nel The Complaynt of Scotland, un libro scozzese del 1549.[1]

Nel XVIII secolo la ciurma della Jackdaw, il brigantino capitanato dal pirata e Assassino Edward Kenway, durante i suoi viaggi nel mare delle Indie occidentali cantò numerosi canti, i cui testi li recuperava il capitano stesso durante le soste a terra.[2]

I canti marinareschi continuarono ad essere diffusi anche decenni dopo, durante la guerra franco-indiana, dove l'equipaggio della Morrigan, un brigantino della Royal Navy impegnato nel Nord Atlantico e nelle colonie britanniche della River Valley capitanato dal Templare Shay Cormac, cantava diversi canti marinareschi. Anche in questo caso, i testi li recuperava il loro capitano durante le loro soste a terra.[3]

Durante la guerra di indipendenza americana anche gli uomini dell'Aquila, imbarcazione dell'Assassino Connor Kenway, cantarono diverse canzoni popolari nell'epoca.[4]

La tradizione dei canti marinareschi iniziò a scomparire in seguito all'utilizzo, su ampia scala, delle navi a vapore e all'automatizzazione di gran parte delle mansioni a bordo, sottraendoli alla ciurma, intorno al XIX secolo. Infine, il loro uso divenne trascurabile nella metà del XX secolo, tuttavia ciò non le impedì di venire riscoperta ed ottenere popolarità presso il pubblico e a ispirare il suo utilizzo per altri media come la letteratura.[1]

Caratteristiche[]

I canti erano dotati di testi flessibili, dovuti alla forte improvvisazione di cui furono soggetti nel tempo. Nonostante ciò, i testi erano composti essenzialmente da due parti, il canto e il coro. Il canto molto spesso veniva effettuato da un singolo marinaio che cantava le battute di apertura e stabiliva il ritmo per poi essere seguito dal resto dell'equipaggio che rispondeva in coro alla sua battuta eseguendo un ritornello.

  • Come già accennato, il primo riferimento scritto ai canti marinareschi è del XVI secolo, tuttavia non sono chiare le origini dei canti supponendo che esse si trovano nei canti di lavoro che iniziarono a diffondersi nella marina britannica e di altre tradizioni marittime nazionali. Tuttavia, la parola "canto marinaresco" apparso sia in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag sia in Assassin's Creed: Rogue è anacronistico, in quanto tale termine indicante canto di lavoro in campo marittimo non si era ancora sviluppato se non a metà del XIX secolo, dove furono usati a bordo delle navi mercantili americane. L'etimologia della parola "canto" è sconosciuta, nonostante vi siano alcune teorie sulla sua origine. Infatti si suppone che possa derivare dal francese "chant", a sua volta derivante dal latino "cantare".
  • In Assassin's Creed: Pirates si possono ascoltare versioni remixate e ridotte di alcuni canti marinareschi.
